Moving 800 miles with 10 chickens

they will be able to move - but not so much room they flap around too much. something like this: (not my pic)

I think that if you have them in secured dog crates with food and water access, they'd be just fine.
I think so too. I would add that some blankets underneath the crates might be a good idea, so they rattle less. You didn't say what you'd have in there for bedding, but maybe put some old towels with pine shavings on them so it's not slippery underfoot? If you run out of blankets to have draped over, you can line the crates with large sheets of cardboard. That's how I turned a dog crate into a brooder for day old chicks.

The dog crates have a lot of other uses too; brooder, integrating pen, "time out" box, and as a dog crate. They aren't cheap, but I can find lots of uses for them. Plus, they fold up nice and flat.
