Moving forward...

Just wanted to update. I have not abandoned this project nor this thread.

I've had a bad few weeks. I won't trouble you with details but it went something like this:

Me--- Injured
Me--- Sick
Old Dog--- Died
Me--- Sad

But, I am well now both physically and mentally.

I have made some progress on the project in the last few days and will up date with photos hopefully tomorrow.

Wow - when it rains it pours, huh? So sorry you've had such a rough few weeks. Glad you're healing. Sorry about the dog.

So, as of today, the "windows" are installed and screwed in. so X2



The divider walls for the breeder pen side are all framed and 3/5th of them are totally finished.

The Pop door frames... 4/5 are installed and 3/5 have the pop doors completed. One pop door frame I mis-measured and need to trim a bit.

The pop doors are the thing I am particularly thrilled with. Although the ideas where borrowed, I do feel very happy happy with the design and how they came out.





They raise and lower via drawer sides. Notice the door hinge at the top of the door... Flipped backward but whole in this pic.
The rope will attach to the top half of the hinge and go through pulleys up and over the coops. The doors will be opened from the isle, with out having to enter the coop or run.

The thing that is particularly cool about these is the hinge. When you pull the rope the hinge is straight up and down allowing it to slide between two horizontal braces at the top. When the door is lowered, and the line is slack, the hinge (which is loosely attached) flops down to form a 90 degree angle. This functions as an auto lock... If a nasty little raccoon or such tries to pry the pop door up from the bottom, the hinge hits the brace and will not open more than 1/2 inch. When the line is pulled by human hands, the hinge straightens and slides between the braces.

I love it.

In other news...
The Turkeys made the decision as to when to move. 2 of the 3 hens have gone broodie. Having been bloodied by broodie chickens in the past I have no desire to mess with a broodie, feral turkey.


I have also set 17 turkey eggs and 65 chicken eggs in 2 incubators. So i also need to build a giant brooder in the next two weeks.

I will repurpose some of the selves for that project.

Tomorrow I need to fetch materials but I hope to be hard after it when i return.

Glad things are back on track for you, great progress.
Intrigued by the hinge/lock...but don't quite see it. Maybe more pics of postitions when the ropes are installed?

His looks a bit different but they work the same.

That makes sense, kinda what I thought.....your spacing looks off, or pieces missing still, but maybe not complete yet?

The hinge barely clears the wood. It is probably a beefer hinge than I need, but I had them already. A smaller hinge would allow me to narrow the gap and I may yet do that... I just don't want one that will be easily bent.
