Moving long distance with livestock

Think of the times on the Oregon Trail where people transported some livestock with them. Granted, they were generally used to pull carts or ridden, but hey in this day and age you can make it work.

Boxes exist for sending chickens through the mail. Maybe look at information for mailing adult birds--space per bird, what bedding would keep it from stinking up the post office, ideas for wet feed that they can eat while traveling (but which doesn't spill).

If chickens can get mailed safely (24+ hours not unusual), they should also be fine travelling with you. You already know not to leave them sitting in hot sun, which is one of the biggest dangers to avoid.

I agree with (I believe it was) @ValerieJ when she said to bring the heifer with the horse. I completely agree. Unless they don't trailer well, bring them together as your horse will love the additional company giving her less stress.

Prices went up a while ago. You're looking at an easy $300 for a 5lb bird.

Why would you leave the chickens? Do you think it’s too much for them?
Yes. And the smell.

A 3hr trip was hard enough on a group of 7 and the smell was horrid. Try that with 8-10 for 18+hrs.
