Moving to Florida-want to take my flock

I have to say that is about the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!!!!! I do know that we will be paying about 3 times more for our new house insurance rates because it is a log home and we aren't located specifically close enough to a fire station. But chickens--I never thought there would be an issue. Thanks for bringing it up and I will certainly check.

One of the reasons we chose this property because it is rural and zoned for agricultural purposes. Id like to see anyone tell me I can't have chickens there........

They might look at the fire hazard for heat lamps in a coop that is not wired for electric. It is a real concern because extension cords are over used and not stored properly causing problems (along with the heat lamp itself). Are you buying this property? If you are you can ask for a quote both with and without chickens to see if there is a problem. Call as soon as possible to see if there are any concerns. Also, one of my family had a wired coop and got a discount from State Farm because it was built up to code and they considered it less of a risk. I don't know about FL's exact concerns as I live in LA, but it couldn't hurt to ask. Your real estate agent and insurance company can be a valuable resource here.

I appreciate all the valuable information--and I will certainly have the hubby check with the insurance company. I assume he told them when he got quotes that we have horses--not sure about chickens. I tell you the thought of leaving my little flock behind is putting a lot of anxiety on me (I have to rehome one of my horses too). It almost makes me throw up my hands and say I am not leaving :(.

I am really glad I posted for info and ideas. This has brougt up things I never would have thought would be a problem. Thanks all :)

I will also be moving with my Seramas. I plan on keeping only my best and taking them in cages with some Gro-Gel. I am worried about the stress on them.
I totally understand Jen.......... I want to do the right thing by my birds.

Thanks so much for your post and replies!!! I too am moving from Utah to Washington, about 14 hrs as well!!! We are also moving 2 Newfoundlands, 1 husky/lab mutt 1 - 18 yr old cat and my 3 sweet 7 month old chicks!! We've gone back and forth with whether to take the chicks or leave them, but I am so attached and we do have a wire dog kennel we thought they'd fit into nicely!! Best of luck to you love2greys!!! I Love the jellied water idea!!!

Thank you lisa! I wish the you best of luck as well! Unfortunately it looks like I may be having to leave my flock with my friend......... I have done lots of research and it appears that I would have to test them for pullorum typhoid which isn't an easy proposition. There is no way that I could sneak their numbers into the state as I would really like to. If caught without paperwork they would most likely be confiscated and destroyed. This really upsets me to have to start over as I am attached to the little characters.

Oh I am sooo sorry to hear this!! The whole moving process is so stressful to begin....I am just so sorry you have to leave your sweet chicks behind!! I am still contemplating that as well, I guess we are fortunate to have friends to leave them with!!! I wish you the very best of luck with your new chapter in florida!!!
