Moving to NY - new predators including bears!

You may want to keep in mind that here in Delaware County they released a whole mess of wolves last year -- I'm sure they've multiplied and expanded their range. It wouldn't surprise me if they've gotten as far as the Catskills.

But electric fence does sound like a good idea if you'll be having bears in your neighborhood...

Sorry, but that is a crock--no one is releasing wolves in NYS. Where in heck did that rumor get started? There are, however, eastern coyotes in Delaware County as well as most other counties in NYS--including NYC. They have been present in the Catskills since the 1930's and, from DNA research results, seem to be a coyote/wolf cross.

I have had a home in upstate NY on Lake Ontario and the St Lawrence River (border of Canada) for over 20 years. We also have 100 acres of woodland near Adams, NY in the Tug Hill Section. During all that time we have never seen or heard any wolves and we have never heard anyone else say that they saw or heard a wolf. I do not believe that there are any wolves in NY State. There are wolves accross the river in Ontario, Canada and I guess it could be possible for a wolf to cross the lake or river when it ices up in winter, but that is very doubtful.

I was told so by several different folks who have connections with a group that (the friends said) released them. I don't know exactly what group it was they were talking about. So I was just repeating information I was told. And I have heard howling that cannot come from a coyote. I know we have coyotes around here, and I know what they sound like, and the howls I have heard do not sound like coyotes.

If I'm wrong, I stand corrected. But I am not going to argue with the people who let them go.
