My seven hens are turning three in July and my Speckled Sussex, Dottie, was a total Hormonal Helen this month, so I figured I’d seize the day. I ordered six Brahma chicks! They arrived Monday and spent their first day in the basement brooder groovin‘ on the warmth.

Monday night, I sneaked them under Dot and crossed fingers and toes that she’d wake up on Tuesday and think, “wth? I went to bed last night sitting on two wooden eggs and I wake up to six squirmy peepers!”

She really has done an awesome job so far. She lets the little Hellions pull her eyelids and wattles, climb up on her, shows them where the food and water are... She’s very protective and has fought like a rooster with one of my EEers who woke up on the wrong side of the roost this morning.

She‘s also okay with some of her flock-mates coming all the way into the nest box to steal baby chow. Bertha, my other EEer, comes in and out now and the chicks will run over to say hello without any fear. Lily, my BLRW, and Blue, my blue Cochin, have come in to say hi too.

One of the buff Brahmas died during the night, and one of the dark Brahmas has a tiny vent prolapse and a poopy butt, but otherwise all are healthy and enjoying the morning sunshine with Momma-Moo. (The dark Brahma seems to be holding her own. She’s able to poop, is eating and drinking and running around like a champ. Fingers crossed for little Mary Pooper.)

I want a broody! but somehow none of our wyandottes will...

Wow, what a difference a few days makes! The Littles are venturing further and further from Momma and are becoming very independent. They’re catching and eating bugs, they’re freely interacting with the rest of the Flockers, and are starting to feather out. Momma took them outside the run for the first time this morning and there were a few fright squeaks and they stayed pretty close to her, but even so, my two light Brahmas were exploring about three feet away from her. Mary Poopins, the dark Brahma with the tiny prolapse, has decided that she likes to nap on my hand or arm. The rest of them still don’t like to be picked up, but will eat on my hand and even tolerate a few minutes of my holding them as long as I hold them so they can see out in the yard or somewhere else “interesting.” Only my buff Brahma doesn’t tolerate my touching her (without picking her up). Guess I need to dedicate some “buff time” for the next few days!
