Mud in my run

Can you post photos of your set up?

You have no location listed. What's your climate like? What is currently in the run right now, just dirt?

Do you have drainage issues at the location? Is the run in a low lying spot in the yard?

Playground mulch (hardwood chips) works well. You can get it at most landscape supply places. The key is at least 6 inches deep. It will stay for a winter or a bit longer in a run that is not covered. If there is a bit of a slope, a few 6 inch logs will prevent most of it from getting kicked down the slope. Some use wood chips from tree trimming companies, but I've always been concerned about the possibility of pesticides or the like in that from trees along roads that have been sprayed. Maybe a little too much thinking. I also chip my own with a winter's worth of branches and trees down.

Hi,I was wondering I have a light Sussex and a rhode island red crossed with a light Sussex and I am getting 3 more my options are goldilocks, blackrock, white leghorn, brown leghorn, orpington and a bluebell.

Depending on your setup creating a drainage ditch to direct the water around the run could help. If the flow is going directly through the run due to the lay of the land you could dig out a trench and lay in a small culvert pipe (you can get creative here PVC, ABS, Corrugated drainage pipe, etc) and rebury it Like a driveway culvert.

If your ground is seeping wet and there is no distinct flow to manage then mulch or gravel in the worst spots (or all over) would be helpful.

Post some pictures if you can and we can give more specific advice.
