Look up run bedding. It's been talked about a million times.

Look up deep litter - provided that you don't have a drainage problem at the location, that will fix mud and odor issues.

What part of the world are you in? Climate matters.

Your climate may indicate a different management system than mine given we get very little rain here for example.

I like to put leaves that I rake up from the yard in any muddy areas.

Any dry organic material will help, but coarse wood chips of the sort you get from a tree trimming service are often considered the gold standard for mud.
