When it rains a bunch here.. my completely covered run gets water.. and lots of it in the new addition.. so I put in six bags of pine bark and about four bags of pine shavings.. helps immensely!! Over time I will continue to add different materials.. leaves, pine needles and such... which will add to the flooring raising it up.. but I LOVE the pine bark the best! I also have Cochins ...
Those are great photos of the difference deep litter can make in the right setting. My run was a mud pit by the time I started adding chips, and now it's so solid to walk on and drains nicely so that even after a huge storm there's only a few puddles around the edge of the run where the chickens tend to scratch the most.
