muffs/beards showing up out of the blue *pic added*

I have a bird like that. This little girl is 3/4's Orpington and 1/4 AUSTRALORP or so I thought. Now the truth is out. lololol

He carries the muff/beard gene but it just didn't not express itself on him is my take, but I'm no genetics guru. Probably one of his parents was also beardless. I've hatched beardless Ameraucanas on occasion out of breeder stock (not EE), a flaw in the breed to be sure, but I won't be surprised if their kids have beards and muffs.

Yes!!! It is! I can't for the life of me remember if he had a muff/beard when I first got him... I don't have any pictures of him from then. I don't remember him having one... do you??? Maybe my hens just like his face feathers? lol

Wow he did turn out beautiful..I can solve the mystery

YES he had a nice beard when we had him both parents did have a beard.Where I got him he only had bearded birds in his flock..it wasn't the best but you had no trouble knowing he was an EE If I can get my old computer to turn on I will try to get his pictures out..I didn't copy the old pics

Yay! Thanks for solving the mystery! He's taking forever to molt (still hasn't gone through his first molt) so maybe they'll grow in when he does. His chicks are gorgeous!

You should see the splash guy we bought from Garners..oh wait I won't take his picture

he has been plucked clean-can tell he had a beard and it's trying to come back but it's just ugly right now.Found the pictures I had uploaded some to my photobucket. He was one of my favorite's but only needed so many and my sons pet roo stays. I have more of him but they are in the other computer

Are you hatching them under a hen or in a bator? When I hatched sex-link chicks this spring (using a bator), I found this out... At 100F I got 50/50 roos/pullets. At 102F I got 20/80 roos/pullets. I later found out through BYC that male embryos do better at the lower temps, and female embryos do better at higher temps. The difference was NOT that the temperature influenced the gender of the embryos, but that the higher temps killed the males. If this makes sense...

Your roo is very handsome, even without a beard.

My Dad's always teasing me about my EE ladies with beards... But I think they're cute!

The chicks hatched early so my temp was running high - and I had a 100% hatch. I just think I'm not having great luck this year. I hatched out some lav. cochins and got 5 roos and 2 pullets
