Hello, i have a 20 week old Delaware who has been laying for a few weeks. The past week she has layed a good normal egg. Shortly followed by 2 soft shelled eggs in the same day. Total of 3 eggs per day. Shes done this twice now. She gets pretty uncomfortable looking prior to dropping the soft eggs, which shes done out side of the nesting boxes each time. Once by the waterer and the other in the garage. Almost like theyve surprised her.

Heres a photo of the two soft eggs she layed this evening. After a good egg this afternoon.

Any ideas as to whats going on? Thank you!

It is normal for first time layers to lay soft/softer eggs. She probably just needs calcium like oyster shells which can be purchased at tsc or farming stores. Usually oyster shells can help build up the egg shell strength.

Yes, that is actually pretty cool. A production red I had layed like 4-5 eggs in one day. Those where her first eggs and one was a miniature egg.

That just means that her body let to many yolks go in the 24-25 hour period of time for one yolk for one egg. If she is doing that every day than she is one cool chicken.

Thanks for the reply! I do have oyster shell out for them. Is it normal for 1 chicken to lay 3 eggs in one day?
Not usually but in the first month or so of laying just about anything is possible.
Multiple eggs in a day with a new layer is can be one 'good' egg usually followed by softshell eggs.
Hormones are running rampant and will settle down in time....they do look uncomfortable when laying the softshells, it must feel different.

I had one pullet stand stock still, apparently staring off into the distance, for almost an hour. I was worried she was ill, but kept checking on her and eventually she was doing her normal chicken things and large softshell was on the floor where she had been standing. saw that happen a few times with different birds.

New layers can be quite goofy acting, they don't know what they are doing at first and can be confused and anxious, it can take up to a month or so before they get it all figured out. Putting some fake eggs or golf balls in the nest might help show them where to lay. They may scratch around in the nests for weeks before laying. Meanwhile, eggs everywhere, some of them can be rather funky looking, soft or thin shelled, huge double yolked eggs.

So i have a young hen doing this. Will just drop trow and pop one out in the grass. Been doing it for several days now, 2 or 3 a day. Looks disturbed too. Has had layer pellets and oyster shell since they started laying, probably before she did, others got a jump on her i believe.

Anyway, any update on what happened with any of these hens?
