Actually, I do believe that a HUGE portion of the "postal handling problems" mostly certainly IS McMurray's fault. There is no reason that they have to hatch chicks on Friday and get them in the mail on the weekend. NONE. No other hatcheries do this, to my knowledge.
When they ship on Friday, it's up to the dock worker at the distribution center if they should so happen to call you at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, or if they choose to let the chicks go on to your local PO Monday morning.
I had to drive about 130 miles round trip to get my chicks late Saturday night from the distribution center so they did not sit on a frigid cold dock with no food, water, or heat until Monday, at which point they would have all been dead.
If they'd shipped on a week day, it would eliminate at least a full 24 hours from the shipping schedule.
I got 27 chicks and only one was dead on arrival. I feel I got VERY lucky as it seems that McMurray's losses are unusually high due to the weekend shipping thing.
Also I didn't feel the customer service was that great. Wasn't terrible, but wasn't stellar either. When I called to express my concerns, the rep on the phone had a "Yeah whatever." attitude. She seemed annoyed, short, and stressed on the phone. She said that my chicks would have come FINE on Monday morning, and that all the stress I experienced trying to find my chicks and get them picked up over 60 miles away from my home, was brought on by myself. If I'd just waited until Monday, I could have picked them up locally and they would be fine.
But what she doesn't understand is that many people who wait until Monday end up with heavy losses, and I did NOT want that.
