Murray McMurray hatchery???????

It would have ended up being that many birds anyway, three of us are getting about 10 each, thanks for letting me know though!

I ordered some chicks from McMurray. I got 15 hens and 3 roosters. Im culling out 2 roosters . My question is, will it be safe to breed the roosters with theses hens? Because they might be brother sister. Is inbreeding chickens ok ?

You can now order as few as 15 chicks from McMurray, chicks are sexed if you want, rare and semi rare birds are available, and you can get "show quality" birds. There is always work to do on your part and knowing what to look for, even champion show birds don't always produce decent birds. My last batch of 30 ordered included 38 and I lost one. Make sure you know what birds are hardy or not and plan accordingly. ANYONE, hatchery or not, that tells you they don't have or that you should not expect a 5-10% mortality rate when raising birds is full of chicken poo. Things happen. 2 days in transit is good, even if you had a hatch time on Friday. It's the shipping that is hard on them with the temperature extremes. I hope McMurray isn't slipping and I would like to hear how you make out with the next 2 hatcheries. Did you order the same kind of chicks the last 3 years or just an assortment?

Just received my order from Murray McMurray, the chicks hatched and shipped on Saturday and were obviously at my post office (in ME) Sunday night as my PO lady called me at about 7:30 Monday morning to tell me they were there. All 36 survived the trip however two (my free rare exotic and a friend who split the order with me has an Ameraucana that are pretty weak) Over all I would say I would order from them again :)

We recieved our first order Monday morning from McMurray, I got the email that they had shipped at 4AM on Saturday, they had supposedly shipped out around 12AM Saturday morning, I recieved them Monday morning, so 2 days plus a few hours in shipping and all were very healthy and energetic. I expected to lose some due to the weekend shipping which I didn't care for but it turned out to not be a problem, I am in Northern WI so it isn't terribly far from Iowa, also it has been nice and cool temperature. Time will tell what the chicks turn out like, as of now I would order from them again, though I do want to try Cackle as well.

To Brody 73: Very unlikely they are brothers/sisters....On a casual basis such as this just don't worry about this...Inbreeding is common and sometimes beneficial...Good Wishes..

To Chicken Keith: Sounds like you are an oldtimer chicken wise.....Maybe you will agree that some of the very best old hatcheries are by coincidence some of the very best hatcheries SURVIVING TODAY: Murray McMurray, Estes, Cackle, Ridgeway, Central, Mt Healthy, Eagle's Nest, Clearview Stock Farm, etc. I sincerely think that these people do the best they can and try to make amends when necessary..Good Wishes..

I just read further into this post, I cannot believe all the losses people have had from hatcheries, none of my birds died, I have had them since Monday and they are very active, they shipped Midnight Friday night, which I didn't care for but it didn't seem to bother them, I seriously think most losses are due to shipping conditions more so than a hatchery selling sub par birds, I doubt they would stay in business if half your order dying was a common occurance. I think time in shipping and temperature have a lot to do with it, also who knows if some careless mail worker drops them or something stupid, can't blame all those losses on the hatchery, one here and there I could see, sure a chick here and there will not be as strong as others but when you experience major loss I'd look to the USPS. If I ever have to deal with Friday or Saturday shipping again I will request express shipping even if it costs more, I don't want to deal with dead chicks because of stupid shipping practices.

We've had our chicks now 4 days and so far have lost 5 with another looking like it's on it's way out :( McMurray was good to give me a credit for the 5 dead but I'm really worried about the rest. The one who looks like she's dying now was fine yesterday, up and running around. :/

I received 16 chicks 6 weeks ago. Today all are looking great. Healthy and growing fast.

I think the biggest problem with the condition of the birds is the inconsistent handling by the postal service. Hatcheries don't make money off of dead birds. (Just my opinion)

Maybe a better way to look at this issue is by looking at what postal locations the birds stopped at in route. Some locations are probably a lot worse than others. My order went by ground from MaMurray's facility in Iowa to the Minneapolis, then straight to Las Vegas by air. Not much ground transport, except in-town. Also, living in Vegas, I wouldn't place an order to arrive in July and expect the best condition.
