Murray McMurray hatchery???????

I'm in NH, and my parents had ordered from MM a couple of times when I was a kid. We always enjoyed trying to identify the mystery chick. My parents never had any problems with their chicks.
I got my first order 11Jun12, and my daughter has enjoyed them so much. I ordered 25 chicks ( a variety of breeds) and got the free mystery chick. They sent me 30 chicks! I had one DOA, and then lost 3 more-but I still ended up with 26 so I was happy with that. Our mystery chick is a Japanese Bantam. I would order from them again.

Murry mcmurry has excellent stock! they ship on fridays so your chicks sit in post office on sunday. mine were soo cold they were peeping very loudly, when i put them under the heater in the car they finally quited down. lost 2 of 51. if a worker (contractor not postal employee) had not called me sunday morning and arranged for me to meet him they would have died by mondays delivery.

So i now buy from meyer hatchery who ship early in the week.
There blaming the postal service, but they send them out on friday. Don't they know the post office is closed on sunday.

Anyways here is a picture of three breeds from murry mcmurry
Crow in the back is a ameracana they called her but to me shes an EE
Reno in the middle is a black australorp
and CC in the front is a barred rock.

This is what worries me. I placed an order weeks ago that supposedly shipped yesterday & says it will come Tuesday! My PO is not open on Sundays. They don't deliver, they call & we go pick up. Hoping they arrive tomorrow, otherwise they will spend three days in transit.

I know that post offices are usually closed on Sundays, and maybe this is different for every state, but my chicks arrived to the Anchorage, Alaska post office on Easter Sunday, and they called me in the morning and I drove into town to pick them up. The post office they were shipped to was the air port post office, the main distribution center. I would think most post office distribution centers would be open, and they would call you? So all states are different, but this actually worked out perfectly for me and if they can make it all the way up to Alaska (and all 30 chicks are still alive and beautiful) I wouldn't think shipping anywhere else would be an issue.

I'm on this site looking to see if my McMurray purchase last spring ('12) was an anomaly or something others have seen. I purchased Buff Orpingtons and the mature hens lacked the fullness of size and fluffiness of "normal" buffs. Furthermore they had a lot of white feathers. In fact one Buff chick matured into a completely white hen. I don't feel like I got what I ordered but none of this was apparent for many months. I'm ready to order some more hens and I'd like to know how to assure that I get birds representative of the breed. If you had a similar experience I'd like to hear about it. And if you have recently purchased some stellar buffs, where did you get them?

if your looking for good quality you will have to find a breeder. Look and see if you have a local thread here on byc and they can direct you in the right direction. Or search for the breed your wanting on here and ask. Hope this helps. I know on the east TN thread there are people that raise lavender orps.

A little info on Murray McMurray. I received my chick a week ago (27 Jan 13). I ordered 47 total chicks of various breeds. I even went as far as to call my main post office hub and ask them to call me and I would pick them up whenever they got there. I received the call at 11:00pm on a Sunday. I drove the 2 hours round trip to get them faster to reduce the stress....if I had waited to get them from my local post office...who knows how many more would have died. 2 of the chicks were DOA in the box when I opened it. Later that day 3 more died. And the next day 3 more died. 1 day after that I only lost 1. Also, I ordered 4 Golden laced Wyandotte's...they didn't ship them to me. Their was a sticker on the inside of the box that said they said they ran out. Now keep in mind I ordered these chicks 3 months in advance. So there's no excuse for not sending them.

OK, now I have 3 chicks with crossed beaks and 1 with an eye problem. I will probably cull them tomorrow.

I would suggest trying to find a local hatchery around you and buy them from there. I am not happy at all with McMurray. Although their people were very nice on the phone each time I called...I believe their chicks are sub-standard. Be prepared to lose a 1/4 of them due to death or sub standard breeding.

I'm just sayin....lol

I just placed an order with McMurray and I'm anxious to get my chicks! I have 15 bantams and 15 standards coming Feb 20th. I live on an island in SE Alaska, I'm nervous about the chicks surviving their journey as it is still fairly cold here. Anyone order chicks from McMurray and had them sent somewhere remote like this before? Are the shipping boxes they use protective enough to keep the chicks warm? This will be my first chickens :)
