My Sister ordered ducklings for me from Murray McMurray. They were shipped yesterday, and this morning I finally got tracking info, they're scheduled to arrive in the morning, I've made arrangements to pick them up as soon as they arrive. One thing that I noticed is that McMurray is in Iowa, but the tracking says that they're en-route from Chualar California. I was worried before, but now that they're traveling twice as far the worry has increased! Also, in the tracking info was the invoice, which I didn't see before because they are a gift. I noticed that the shipping is $45, you'd think for that amount they'd be able to overnight them instead of it taking 3 days! I will have my niece, who is 4, when I pick them up, she will be devastated if any of them have died:-(

The high shipping cost reflects the special packaging it takes to keep just 3 ducks alive. In larger orders, the birds collective body heat keeps them warm during the shipping process. When a few are ordered it takes much more insulated packaging to keep them from freezing to death during transit.

Thanks Fluff, that makes sense I'm only getting 4 ducklings. I have never received any living creatures via mail order, this is all new to me;-)

I think that McMurray (like a lot of hatcheries) drop ships their waterfowl orders from Metzer Farms, which is why the ducklings come from CA http://www.metzerfarms.com/ good luck with your ducklings, hope they all make it safe.
