Murray order received DOA

I am so sorry!

I know how upsetting that is: I had a order from Ideal shipped 2/6 came on the 8th!

I even ordered 10 extra (for warmth) 1/2 were dead 1/4 were moving but, not going to make it (these were mine & daughters birthday chickens) it was horrible!

I believe it was the time of year weather goes back & forth!

I'm sorry you has this happen, barb.

I had that happen once with an order from Cackle. Poor things. It was totally the PO's fault. When I called the hatchery they said they had gotten a whole bunch of calls from people who lived in the northeast who's chicks were also DOA and had narrowed it down to one truck.

I've never had chicks DOA from MM (only sick chicks from MM) or Ideal and I do think the time of year matters, too. There have been a significant number of storms this year which can delay the shipping.

My first order isn't scheduled to ship out until March 30th with Ideal.

I'm sorry that this happened to you too, Pelican49!

It sounds like the consensus is to wait for warmer weather before ordering. Last year we ordered in March and had great success. We weren't watching the weather; the timing just worked out that way. We're in Western NY - not the warmest place. Our Post Office is looking into the reason for the delay. Meanwhile, we'll wait until the forecast looks good for both us and the shipper.

Thanks again everybody for your help!

Mypetchicken is amazing to deal with. Their prices are high. I got 26 chickens from McMurray for $10 cheaper than 18 chicks would have been at MPC. My order from MPC last August came within a day or two. All but one survived. My only beef: they didn't get any of my birds right except 2 of the 7. I got 4 barred rocks, a barnevelder, a SLW, a GLW when I ordered a GLW, a SLW, a Speckled Sussex, 2 red stars, 2 favorelles. Their customer service is great, but I think the issue is that they are not the hatchery - the hatchery they are contracted with makes substitutions without notifying MPC.

I'm really sorry about this. I know it's been a very bad week for shipping anything, by any means anywhere in the US. My company gets daily deliveries of medical records and specimens- which are time sensitive, and with the storms this week, everything is behind and backlogged- it doesn't seem to matter where the origin or destination is-- everything is either still on a plane that can't leave an airport, in a plane that can't be offloaded because the loading areas are full, waiting for a truck that's still out delivering the last late shipment, or on a truck that can't make the plane that's taking off due to weather. It's a MESS this week

I'm sorry about the loss of your chicks. Like has been said tho I don't think it's the hatchery's fault ....or the PO's this time either. None on us have any control over the weather unfortunately. That's one reason that when I used to order from the hatchery ....McMurray's in fact is the only one I ever ordered from......even tho I was anxious to get them I waited until the later part of March usually to get them because then I trusted that the weather more likely than not would not be so cold.

I used to order from McMurray in the earliest months I could get chicks and very few were DOAs but majority of the chicks I ordered all survived and lived out their years on my farm. I have to say do not blame McM for the loss of the chicks, blame it on the PO if not the weather factor. They would gladly replace or you can just insure your chicks that way if you need to be compensated for the chick losses. Either way, it really places the responsiblilty of the buyer that orders the chicks. I am ordering mine from Ideal and McM at the end of this month and I do expect some DOAs and weak chicks considering the PO snail mail and weather factors. And they guarantee the replacements and they made good on those!

I have never had a bad experince with MM.

It doesn't take those little gys much to get cold and once they get cold for very long the worst happens. Please, no matter which company you order from check the weather forcasts for several days after the chicks are to be shipped. Try to plan for the best weather for a shipment.

Sorry this happened to you.

Again, I am so impressed with the number of responses to my problem. I'll definitely wait until mid-late March to order my chicks. I'm new to this forum, and have spent a little time reading past posts. I've learned a lot!

Thanks again,

Barb
