Muscovies in US - REGULATION CHANGES OPEN FOR COMMENTS - 10/1 update

As far as enforcing it people might report posts on craigslist etc. It really sickens me. If people in Florida have a problem with the ducks let them get rid of them. Why are they mandating the flocks on small farms up here? I have never had a muscovy escape into the wilds!

Question. I read the information on the website. Can I still purchase live ducks for meat after March 31st? It is hard for me to understand but it sounds like you might still be able to buy and sell live ducks for meat only. I like meat. However, I could not insure that someone who bought a duck from me would use it for meat even if they said they would. How can I control that?

You know, I live here in Florida, and there is always alot of chatter about the muscovies, but I seriously don't see what the problem is! It's really NOT like they are EVERYWHERE and we're all wading around in duck poop or something! They are around, but, too me, in a very pleasant way. I really don't see this 'big overpopulation' issue as an evident part of life here. Though, I agree, from the way some people TALK about it, you would think we are living in the Muscovy version of Hitchcock's THE BIRDS! I don't get it!
Honestly, the people that I generally hear complaining are proprieters and homeowners who don't like them pooping on their sidewalks. Personally, I think this is a pretty weak reson to go killing something. And for krimenies sake, stop feeding them garbage carbs like bread and maybe they won't be making disgusting poops on your lawns, jerks!!!

Sorry , had to vent!

I don't think it's the poop they are worried about. It's that the non-native species often use up the resources of the native species and crowd them out. Many examples of this in Florida - inlcuding pythons, parrots, Gambian rats, mandarin ducks, and many, many others.

It does stink for the responsible owners but also stinks for the native wildlife.

"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Doesn't "masses" include flocks?

While were on the topic of muscovies can anyone tell me about my two girls . I got them from a farm and the lady had a lot of them and we only caught two and they have not layed eggs last summer or this year so I was wondering they both have white bills they look as if the color has been scratched off it's green near their face and fades to white before mid way down from the beek. Are my girls too old to lay eggs since we don't know how old they are?

Ya, I get that that is ostensibly the issue here-- I still just dont 'see' it, though. The malard populations live harmoniously with the muscovies. the bigger probelm for them, actually, is that people feeding them too much often discourages them from migrating like they are supposed to.

Our big cranes and other exotic birds generally don't live in the same types of places as the muscovies do (they seem to prefer wetlands and river swaps, ducks seem to stay around the small, open ponds)-- and when they do visit these ponds they seem pretty happy to see the muscovies because they have the awful habit of gobbling up their babies. yuck. But, not a detriment to the cranes, anyway.

The only native speicies that the muscovies seem to have a negative impact on are spiders (many seriously poisonous here in FL) and mosquitos. Not much love for them, anyway.

So, I know what the arguments are, I just don't see them born out in real-life observation down here.

I agree the Federal government has surpassed these constitutional limits for a very long time now!!
I worry each time a new law like this gets passed and accepted what will come next.
People always say these rules will be reasonable in its enforcement, but times change. When these laws are on the books they will be enforced according to whoever happens to be in control at the moment.
We need to stop this before it become entrenched as a foundation for new restrictions on our rights.
Think of all the domestic ducks gone feral you see loose at the parks now.
Will they soon decide to apply this rule to ALL ducks unless you have a permit for food production?
Duck Feeder has the info in the first post on how to contact your reps!!

ok ty 1heart , I do not have a male muscuvy just a male mallard and runner male's and the muscuvies won't have anything to do with them they are odd birds tho they are the only muscuvies so I guess I need to find them a new home or a NEW MAN geeze their goes my chance of scuvy babies grrrr. I am so sorry for all the scuvy owners as this new news is not fair at all next they will be making us tag and report our chicken's and tax us for their eggs!
