Muscovies in US - REGULATION CHANGES OPEN FOR COMMENTS - 10/1 update

I don't understand how they plan on controlling every single Muscovy owner across the nation... Are they going to come into people's homes and physically remove every bird? To me that doesn't seem practical, let alone possible.

It just doesn't make sense?

I'm starting to think they have put more thought into this than they are letting on. The FWS said they won't go after them in private hands but.... you can't buy new blood, you can't sell what you have, you can't breed them. Think about it, all they have to do is sit back and wait. Inbreeding will take it's toll, people they do catch selling or breeding will be in violation of Federal law and will be 100% guilty in court. it's set up to make it easy for them

I follow the same theory that Sharon from sands has said. They are going to sit back and wait for the breed to die out genetically. The sad thing is that what is going to happen is they are going to kill the meat market too. You see when you buy a duck at the grocery store to grill. Well my friends that is a scovy. What happens if a genetic anomily or disorder shows up in the comercial stock. Then they would normally be able to knock on a hobbyist door to get new blood. But No more my friends. I know what everyone is saying about still selling them to each other. The problem is I can't sell scovys to just other enthusiast. I have to sell to new people and not being able to advertise on craigs and other sites is going to make that difficult.

If anyone is interested in new blood. I spotted a chocolate pied drake at the employees credit union. In Jacksonville NC. A darn Chocolate who dumps a Chocolate

Hello all.

First, I want to thank you for posting the info about the Muscovy ban. I have had Muscovies for 7 years and cannot imagine life without those birds.

Second, I noticed some of you are looking for breeding stock. craigslist is a good place to start a search. I usually have mine listed on our local craigslist.

And last, a shameful plug. I live in central Ohio and currently have Muscovies for sale. I don't know where your private message or email link is though. You'll find my listing on columbus craigslist.

Some people from homesteadingtoday.com also frequent this forum. One of them posted the link for this forum there.

I would stay longer but I have to lock my ducks up for the night.

PS, I didn't read anything in the regs that would prohibit current muscovy owners from getting more birds, or did I miss something?

BIrds already owned on March 31st are legal, however you will not be allowed to breed them or purchase more unless you have a license, and the only licenses available are for food production.

Cant wait to get my pair of muscovys I really dont care about the stupid rule though, they are very quiet so who will know?My neighbors no absolutly nothing of poultry so they wont know that scovys are illegal.

Our staff contacted George Allen this morning, and spoke to him on the phone. He says that this regulation will go into effect, but there will be no enforcement until an amendment will be put together that allows Muscovy raisers to keep their birds without a permit. As of 3/18/10, any persons trying to enforce this law should be directed to him for further information. He is currently putting this in writing and will send you a copy upon request once it is completed. His office, he says, has no time or desire to extract Muscovy permits from anyone or to regulate Muscovy raisers this extensively. The law was made for feral populations. They are currently working on a clause that will allow domestic Muscovies, and anyone on his emailing list (Those who have contacted him regarding this regulation by email) will be sent a notification when the amendment is completed. It will then be open for comments for a short period of time, and he requests that all Muscovy raisers let him know by email before the completion of this clause what they think the law should entail, and give suggestions for this new draft. He says that he is not willing to drop the regulation altogether, as there certainly is a localized issue in places, but he now understands that domestic Muscovy populations need to be taken into consideration.
In summary, this regulation is on hold as of 3/18/10 and will not be presently enforced until a new draft of this regulation is completed. Please send your comments to [email protected].
