Muscovies in US - REGULATION CHANGES OPEN FOR COMMENTS - 10/1 update

"With the new regulation the following would no longer be permissible:
1. Owning muscovy ducks as pets. While it may seem odd that people would would ducks as pets, there is a significant population in the US that does so. While we could have other ducks as pets, muscovy ducks tend to be more community friendly as they do not make loud vocalizations (quacks) that most other domestic ducks do."

Attn to this minor typo for those cutting and pasting this text: "would would" to "would want"

And THANK YOU SO MUCH for drafting this and collecting the addresses-- this makes it sooooo much easier to act!

Muscovy Power!

My quick 2 cents: Regardless of what happens, this is a good example of why it is very important to do all you can to properly care for animals in your custody. I imagine this wouldn't be as much of an issue had people not released their scovies or allowed them to escape and become breeding wild / feral animals.

Reminds me of all the uphill battles waged in cities that want to loosen restrictions on raising backyard chickens because people in the suburbs on small lots have roosters where they shouldn't. Next thing you know all the government officials get complaints that "all chickens are noisy"

Are they a migrating duck? I thought they did not migrate. I know they never have flown away from our property. It seemed like I read they were not a migrating species.

if you can produce a published work on that houndit "that they are not migratory" then the fws has to bow out and remove them.
I have read it to in various places on the web but it has to be published either a scientific study, journal,or authorative book.

My guess is they will start with hatcheries, then watch auctions and online sales sites like Ebay and Carigslist. Obviously if folks want to break the law it will be possible, but then it always is.
