Muscovies in US - REGULATION CHANGES OPEN FOR COMMENTS - 10/1 update

There is a book that contains information on trhe Muskovy duck. It is published by an obscyre organization taht was founded in 1873.

The book: The American Standard of Perfection

The organization: The American poultry Association!

Spoke with both US Senator Blanch Lincoln (Arkansas) and US Senator Mike Pryor (Arkansas) offices today. They both looked up the regulation while I was on the phone. Senator Pryor's office needs a hand written request from me. Lincoln's office is looking into it. Senator Lincoln is chair of the Senate Agricultural committee! Everyone should call Senator Lincoln's office and insist action! She is more able to assist than almost anyone else.

This was slipped by , Ive been calling breeders and judges I know that are in the waterfowl show rings. They believe once it gets out it will be reworded . lets hope so

This stinks! I can understand birth control for them or something but just killing them because they are non native is silly. I hope if they do , they use the meat to feed the poor. Of course our country isn't smart enough to do that.

well i have a beautiful hen who comes up every year, has babies and brings them up and loves my front yard. Looks like i will be DUCKNAPPING her! I would be sooo sad to see her killed because she is a scovie! I named her Bella and she comes right up to me!!! Deb, i might need your help

all i can say is, when i have ducklings, i am not selling them to some who is going to eat them. it's not fair. there are a ton of dangerous animals that are not regulated and the muscovies who happen to be some of the cutest ducks (personality wise) i know of are being punished?? i will not stop my ducks from breeding and i will not sell my ducklings for food. it's not fair. they can kiss my.. you can finish the rest.

there are more important issues to worry about!!!!!

It is simple insanity, feral cats do alot more harm than muscovy. I live in new mexico. My birds could not survive for 1 day there are too many preditors.and no food sources . the birds are to heavy to fly and walking isnt a muscovy key point.

Cottage rose I lived in port huron and out skirts of rocherster during my 4-H days. I never saw a feral muscovy but mallard based breeds and geese. If this law passes the other breeds will be hit as well. Here in NM no one even knows what a muscovy is people keep telling me vultures are in my yard.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE STUPID PEOPLE, DOES ANY ONE THINK THAT MAKING MUSCOVIES AGAINST THE LAW WILL STOP ANIMAL DUMPING???? THEY WILL GET SOMETHING ELSE OSTRICH, PEKINS. THIS LAW ONLY HURTS THOSE OF US WHO CARE ABOUT THE BREED IVE HAD MUSCOVY FOR 35 years. none of mine have ever gone feral or ran or flew away. This is control a step toward stopping us from raising our own food. control the food control the people. Do not close your eyes this will lead to other breeds .....
I live in louisiana during my culinary training, they brought in the nutra rat to help mow down the grass and weeds down. those rats are every where parts of the swamps look like golf courses. They started hunting and useing the rats as a food source contests for cooking. Why wasnt something like that done in florida??? feral muscovy are not pets.... times are tough another food source .

I keep hearing about them being dumped or escaping . If people would stop feeding them . Ive been doing alot of research the last few days . Florida have muscovy every where true . They are not feral they are showing the birds folowing people and begging for food. People feed them than think they wont stay ?? and breed??? here we have a population of retired folk they put dog food out for the grey foxes and bears. The rangers have had to go around and stop this stupidity. Now we have a huge population of semi tame foxes they come up to your fence in day light and bark. And the bears broke in and killed people a few years back. Too me this means they have not gone wild they are being fed . They would not be in mass if not fed. These people take feed out feed and pat themselves on the back how did they help??

I'm not sure that proving they are not migratory birds will necessarily help. The FWS claims that this is to protect native waterfowl that fall under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. They are treating muscovies as an invasive species rather than a domesticated one. Since these regulations are designed to protect other migratory birds, they have enough wiggle room to claim whether or not muscovies migrate is immaterial.

That's just how I'm interpreting things - I'm no legal expert by any stretch of the imagination.

If people feed them or not is besides the point.... the point is...if they are on local town ponds and NOT in someones backyard...then they were released or escaped from their owners...
even if they are NOT fed..they wont go back to their owners house, will they? No, they wont.. they will stay free and breed, and.... hence the problem..
Just my opinion..

My guess is they will start with hatcheries, then watch auctions and online sales sites like Ebay and Carigslist. Obviously if folks want to break the law it will be possible, but then it always is.

The FWS stated that they will not be going home to home. Enforcement will be the responsibility of local government.
