Muscovies in US - REGULATION CHANGES OPEN FOR COMMENTS - 10/1 update

exhibition and flocks for meat/egg production would be exempt from permits. It is the pet market that they wish to control. Thousands of feral ducks that were released when pet folks got tired of them.

If muscovies were wild birds, it would make sense for FWS to regulate them. Since they ARE domestic, it does not. And I believe it becomes an issue that individual states where feral duck populations are a problem that should deal with in the same manner as some have regarding the sale of chicks and rabbits at or near Easter time. Areas where there are no problems will likely not expend the energy to create or enforce unnecessary regulations for a non-existant problem, and areas that DO have a problem would no doubt be first in line to create state regulations. I can see FWS creating a federal ruling that muscovies cannot be released into the wild, but I cannot see that they should have the authority to outlaw them being kept for whatever reason an individual wishes (sans releasing them into the wild).

This appears to be in the appropriate section of the forum, as it applies to laws.

Not a question of moderation, but rather of technical ability--is there anyway to have it show in both places, but with all posts going to the same thread? Or perhaps post a sticky at the top of the duck section that includes the link to here?

I live in Florida, I have pet muscvies, 6 of them, they are my babies....Will they be taken away? I was gonna use them for eggs and breeding, but they are also my pets, I'm scared. I don't want them taken away, my whole life is about ducks, I mean I'm only 13, but i have taken pride and joy into raising and taking care of my babies.

" I was going to use them for eggs..."

Eggs for eating? Then you are covered. Just don't use the term "pet". They are your backyard layer flock. As nice as they look, you should enter them in either a county fair or a poultry show. What city are you near? We may be able to find a poultry show near you to take them to. PM me with your contact info and I can pass it on to someone in Florida that can help. Contact your county extension agent and ask about 4-H. The Florida 4H is located at http://florida4h.org Join the 4H and use your Muscovy ducks as your project. You will need to pinion or otherwise mark them, but as long as they are for meat or egg production or for exhibition, the USFWS and FW should leave you alone.

Jim

Question, is the Pekin duck the mother or the sorragate mother? Are these pure Muscovy or "mules"? The waterway may pose an issue. I would say have them all pinioned ASAP. An aviaian vet should be able to do it for you. Good luck!

Just seen where you listed you were. The local 4H office for Brevard County is http://brevard.ifas.ufl.edu Hope this helps. Ask if they have a poultry project club. Then join the club. If they don't, then join the 4H club nearest you.

This thread started under ducks, but was moved her because it deals with laws. Bet yours will either be moved or locked shortly by the big brothers who watch everything!

I don't think this can be called a local law. Anything of this scope should have some exceptions made. Tom
