Muscovies- new to ducks and an age gap/DRAKE question

My yearling drakes do not try to mate anyone. They mostly peck and pick for pecking order status among themselves and occasionally with the littles and the chickens. You will probably be fine just watching for the next few months as everyone grows up. Don't worry about eating him unless you want to or you notice a problem.

Really? Is it because there are other drakes in the flock? My drake is at about 5 months and has attempted to mate. I don't think he's successful though. I've caught him a few times - if I hadn't seen it - I would still think he is being a good boy. ;)
 
No, mine just don't try until they're almost a year old. There's no interest. My mature drake would probably just cheer them on if they did try. The juvies do poke at each other and sometimes fight, but that's just muscovy. My mallard breeds on the other hand...
(My muscovy are on the large side for muscovy. Maybe they mature extra late? or would rather be eating) Regardless, I would just watch. If you see behavior you don't like, consider a separate pen or culling, especially if you don't think he'll be a keeper.

Mine isn't too bad. He is very vocal when I come around though. I am keeping an eye on him and I don't let him get pushy with me. If it gets to be an aggression thing I definitely will decide on the next step.
 
When we got the ducks I added in 2 4-week old chicks I had living in my house (my broody hen hatched then abandoned them) The ducks didn't seem to mind or care.

Today I came out and both chicks were sitting under the drake!! So so cute.

Maui is half olive egger, 1/4 silkie and 1/4 old English and Masrshmellow is a light Brahma bantam.
 
That's good. I have always raised chicks and duckling in same area and only lost one chick to drowning I am pretty sure mama jumped on the side of the bucket to drink and the lil one followed her but ended up in the water. Broke my heart. Now chicks and duckling get big chicken waterers for the first 3 weeks of life.
