Muscovy ducks are not always "gentle" they can be also very aggressive at times. I know there have been times where, when I thought I would be attacked by them. Nobody said they thought the Muscovy's were aggressive because of their hiss for at least not that I can find.

here's a question to think about the answer. Just think about the park was full of alligators would you be putting this much effort into making them look good and not linked or referred anybody?
As it is right now. Must the lease rarely heard anyone but aggressiveness could become quite common.

Also, please remember that in waterfowl ( I believe the quote me on it) that the female determines the sex of the duckling. So if there were to be five Muscovy females and even one of them produce female ducklings 75% of the time that was still equal a lot of ducklings that could still breed even if 3 out of 4 ducklings got picked off.

My story about Yellow was only an example, offered so that others might understand Muscovies better. Not all animals (including humans) are going to behave exactly the same, in every situation. It's regrettable that you have had some bad experiences, but please, let's not let this go too far, or a BYC moderator will step in!

Peace and best wishes to you:)

I had both aggressive and non-aggressive drakes, since Muscovy drakes are such large birds they could do a lot of damage to a young kid or even an adult if they decided to attack. I'm not saying they all are, but with that many ducks you are bound to have several that will attack.

So your saying that all Muscovy drakes should be gentle just because Yellow was?

What if it was a park full of german shephard dogs that were usually friendly but an attack was possible?

Read your blog, and just wanted to say: great work with the battery hens! I love chickens too. Anyone who stands up for the weak is a hero.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't you never know.

I will say that I have had Muscovies for 7 years. most are rescues, I have 2 drakes one is 8yrs the other I don't know his age, both have never been aggressive towards me or anyone else they have been around. I am very thankful to because I have 3 grandkids that come to visit and the ducks are always around us when we're outside. Now my goose is another story.. I love this breed of duck, they are friendly, and laid back and make wonderful pets, yes I have to wash the poop off the walkway and patio everyday but I also get to interact with an animal which is so cool. I wish there was a better way of dealing with this issue, I am hoping that maybe with the publicity there will be next time.

Thanks Lisa! I really enjoy it, even more so then hatching and raising chicks actually. Its so rewarding to see them come to my farm on the first day, unable to walk properly or stand, to growing into a friendly, backyard hen. I have some Leghorns right now that I got from a backyard farmer who had them in a tiny pen that was FULL of poop. She was selling only half her flock but I wanted so badly to take the rest home

I got them home, gave them baths and they are out free-ranging as I write this. Making them happy, makes me happy

Anyways, that was a bit off topic

My husband is a Florida native too. I'm a transplant, but twenty-two years should count for something! I still remember when the auto dealership on the corner was a cow pasture...I sure miss that cow pasture.

Awesome, that's just awesome. Your parents must be so proud! Chickens are so intelligent, to see them abused is more than I can stand...we rescued a PMU yearling a few years back, but no battery hens (yet). We have many animals, including twenty-eight chickens, one of which is a sweet Leghorn pullet. If we lived closer, my teenage daughter, Lily, would offer to come over and help you. BTW: We live in South Florida, but I have lots of relatives in Canada. Good luck!

Sorry, moderators, for getting WAY off topic.

Just think about the park was full of alligators.

They have Alligator hunting season down there for so many months because they are native and there are to many of them so they have to kill some of them because they are prolific.
The size of the momma depends on how many eggs she will lay. Example: You have a 8 foot female she is capable of produceing 50-70 eggs. Most of them will hatch but only about 20-30 of those babies will make it.

My point is if they didn't have a hunting season there would be gators everywhere! In you're yard, pool, canals, and etc. Alligators are actually moveing up north in the Mississippi River to other states. They have spotted a Alligator in Southern Illinois before which means there will be more shortly.
