Does anyone know how drakes do with chicks? As in, chicken chicks? Praline, my duck, has just not been doing well with all the birds in the main coop. The ducks were bullying her away from food and water and she's very timid of the chickens. It got to the point where she wouldn't eat in the main run with all the birds around - she was just too skittish of all the other birds around and was afraid someone was going to go after her. The chickens never even looked at her, but the welshies would not tolerate her around the food and water. The drake, Fudge, just muscled his way through without ever getting aggressive. He just uses his size and ignores them biting and grabbing at his feathers. Anyway, I've had to put Praline in with the legbar chicks in my other coop. She is not as timid with them and I've seen her eating and drinking, and she doesn't even look at them pretty much. I even saw her letting one ride on her back today, so she's fine with them. I'd like to put Fudge in with her, because he's lonely in the other coop, but I'm worried he'd hurt the chicks. I brought Praline into the main coop for a visit today and they were so happy to see each other, but she immediately reverted into a timid thing too afraid to move around except to follow Fudge if he went too far away. So she had to go back with the chicks.

How old is Fudge, and can the chicks get away from him? If lots of room it maybe okay but I'd be hesitant just because chicks are pretty fragile, I've never seen my drakes being mean to any chicks here but the chicks have their mamas and I haven't kept them closed up together.

He's roughly six months old, and no, there wouldn't really be anywhere for them to go if he tried to get them. It's an 8x8 coop, which is what makes me nervous. The chicks are about 5 and 6 weeks old at this point, so not so big.
