Muscovy keepers share your pics!

I got hatching eggs! We were just about to head home from San Marcos, TX when I asked my Dad to stop in Natalia so we could see what birds one of my favorite poultry suppliers had. It turns out, he had about 7 Muscovy eggs (from that morning) that wouldn't fit into his already full incubators! He gave me the 7-9 eggs and tossed in about three mystery duck eggs for $5!

I only really wanted the Muscovy eggs to hatch beneath my broody hen, so I gave her those. I didn't want to make it 28 days, have three eggs hatch only for the hen to abandoned the Muscovy eggs. I'm gonna try and build an incubator this week so I can put in the remaining eggs and and some eggs that my sister's duck laid.

I also couldn't help picking up 2 Muscovy ducklings. They were just so darn cute and the wife of the breeder sexed them for me and I just couldn't help myself! At $7 a duckling, I gotta say it was a lot less than I thought it would be! The breeder said that he's been hatching out as many Muscovys as possible but they are being snatched up immediately, especially the slightly older birds. Supply and demand generally ups the price of things, I'd say. Muscovys are very popular up there. I wish I could say the same for my hometown!

Got my first Muscovy egg today!! It was an olive color, is that normal for a scovie? For some reason I thought they laid white eggs...
Some of my Scovy's when they first begin to lay will have an olive color to their egg then it turns beige. I've never had a Scovy lay a white egg.

That's what I figured mine would do.

Can you post a pic? It would be a lot more helpful!

Here is a pic of the egg next to some brown/tinted chicken eggs:

Here is a video of the ducks shortly after I got them.

The previous owner had to re-home them quick because their coop had burned down on thanksgiving. They originally had the large drake 'fred' and then got him a mate, the chocolate duck and let the hen set on her eggs and hatched out the other four in video (2 male, 2 female 2013 hatch). Mama duck passed away a couple weeks after I got her (I think from smoke damage- she was singed a tiny bit on face and feathers were in rougher shape than rest, think she was trapped in coop the longest) The two young males were rehomed a month ago, so now it is just the older drake 'Fred' (they told me I couldn't rename him

) and his two daughters.

Yes.. that is a Muscovy egg.. Allot of mine look like that..

What type of range do you get colorwise?

Also, from everyone's experience, if you want the duck to eventually sit on eggs is it best to let them accumulate in nest so she doesn't try to find a better hiding spot or should I continue to collect them? They free range during most of the day and are cooped up at night, but I am a bit worried they may start laying somewhere else during the day if I keep taking them.

Got a second one today!

If you want them to brood leave the eggs alone she'll build her nest and begin to sit first at night then 24/7 she may go broody on 4 or 24 depending on how many you decide to let her keep, first time moms I let them have 4-5 to start with.

Thanks, they act almost like puppies sometimes! They have definitely gotten more used to me and will come waddling over to me if they think I am going to give the chickens treats

They are a little bossy with the chickens and will chase them off if the chickens have found something good.

I'll try collecting them for a bit then and then see if one of them will sit. Love the idea of seeing cute little duckies walking around!

It usually doesn't take a Scovy long to go broody it's their middle name. I have 3 right now sitting on fake eggs since i don't have housing for any more right now, and had to discourage 2 since yesterday. They love to brood and feel it's their duty to over populate the world with little scovy ducklings. They really are just so precious I really miss not having any this year. Muscovy have the best personalities. That's awful they were in a fire.
