Muscovy keepers share your pics!

Went out with my daughter today and got a pair of Muscovy's. There was about 50 or more in the outside enclosure and with the snow melting they were a gray muddy mess. I thought she picked out 2 blue or lavender but when we got them home and gave them a shower the drake is blue and she is brown. Also noticed that the had frostbite damage to their feet and the drake was missing his outer nails one was bleeding so I guess they'll live in the tub for a few days to re coupe and hopefully realize were not big scary aliens.

they'll be spoiled in no time
They do look like they are in need of some TLC. Glad you got them.

Oh poor babies, that said the claw thing? that happens.. it's happened to me twice in the last two weeks.. my big drake, we actually trimmed his nails and my almost 2yo duck ripped one of her's right out the other day.. who knows how? If your leaving them in the tub, do you have a rubber mat down? it'll be to slippery otherwise.

Would love to see updated pics!

Hey all i don`t own a mascovy duck as of yet hwever i was wondering is there a certain age you can tell the sex? I would like a female mascovy as a brooder and i also have a really antsy drake so thought a female around would be good. However the ducksi have now were rescue ducks and they dont have much affection or me i find. Really i just want a duck that will laos be my companion could i do that without having to get a mascovy from a duckling? Im just scared if i get an adult female my drake will stop her from becoming close with me.

I can tell mine by a few weeks old .. but i have raised a lot of them and know the look, venting sexing is an option if you know how, or you can get a sex link colour.. ie; chocolate.

http://www.muscovyduckcentral.com/genetics.html

"Chocolate is the only sex-linked gene.
chocolate X chocolate = 100% chocolate
chocolate X black = black drakelets that carry chocolate and chocolate ducklets.
chocolate X blue = black and blue males that carry chocolate, chocolate and lilac females.
chocolate X self-blue = black males that carry chocolate and pastel and chocolate females that carry
pastel.
chocolate X lilac = 50% chocolate ducklings, 50% lilac ducklings."

It would depend on how the bird was raised, most of mine have grown into ducks if someone worked further with them could get them more in your pocket, trouble is a mature drake cannot be given a duckling, she'd have to be older... if your drake is friendly, he shouldn't persuade another from being friendly. Ducks are prey animals at the core so the instinct to stay away is very strong.

Good Idea on the mat will put it back in. The guy I got them from has a real big set up of chickens and ducks with nice en-closers. But after 73 inch's of snow and - temps it doesn't surprise me. He breeds and sells eggs so they defiantly don't get one on one attention like they would as backyard pets. The drake has tried to nip me but nothing hard more like a nudge. Any ideas on getting them accumulated other than time and of course being their source of food? I'll probably put them with the chickens in their indoor run in a few days.

But I have more eggs, I don't know if 3 of these are from my inbred ducks having babies but the rest are from my white female an lavender pied drake

Now let me tell u about this inbred situation, in fifth grade I started breeding ducks but I only had one set and hat was a mama and babies and then the mama had babies again with one of her sons and a female had babies with one of her brothers, ad all the babies were healthy, and I had 18 grow up but only 15 leave , 3 died and from being in a nasty cage, some babies had leg problems now this was all in 6th grade, all the babies that had leg problems as adults died so I was left with 13 I think but I'm not sure, but in that time I hatched two white heads and there mom and dad were brother and sister and they were healthy, and so they all livd till the summer of 7th grade , they started laying and some died in winter due to predators, but most females died from not finding good nesting spots and they died due to predators and I had no babies that year , except the ones I hatched in a simple do it urself incubator the and they died , except one male but I didn't know it but he was dumb , like dumb and then by the end of summer like in July , he bred with his grandmother and they had eggs but then when she was sittin on a nest she was hurt and eventually died , but I saved one egg, but also forgot to say , earlier that summer two abba idea did hatch but both died when they were adults and I was so sad because I hand raised ten , but tey were fine because they were females, apparently it doesn't effect girls as bad, and so anyway back to the egg I saved. He hatched and he was extremely dumb he fought with my males as a juvenile, and he had his wing beoke from trying to fly , and fight, and so he's in a cage because he's a danger to himself and others, an then that next summer I got fillings from country hatchery and everything is good now , no note predators, by the end of tht summer all predators were gone, and now everything is safe and I have healthy none inbred babies so everything is good now an I try not to let my ducks inbreed and it's been working out great , but due to inbreeding the ducks have great and powerful wings form that gene never wing able to get out of the gene pool , as I want my babies to have that so in a way inbreeding was a good idea for a while because now I can breed them with oter ducks an those babies be normal and have big powerful wings , when had those second babies they were flying at three months!!! So I hope these babies do the same !!!!!

Years ago when folks lived miles apart and didn't travel much [before automobiles] I bet there was alot of inbreeding going on in peoples flocks because it wasn't that easy to obtain new stock. It would be interesting to talk with some of them to see how things went.
