Muscovy keepers share your pics!

Ok, I'm probably going to make some people mad.... So for those of you who think of muscovies as only pets...WARNING: do NOT read any further!

We got some scovies for breeding and meat around Easter, and we finally dispatched our first drake today. (We ended up with 2 hens and 6 drakes :S ...) and I cooked up a skinless breast with only salt and pepper and a little rendered duck fat in a skillet, I cooked it just like you would pan fry a steak. And then I took some cherry/rhubarb/raspberry preserves and melted it into a sauce and poured over the duck. . . . . It was AMAZING!!!!

It tasted exactly like very tender steak! My husband tried it and thought I had switched out the duck with beef! Lol and then proceeded to tell me that we need to get into the duck raising business haha! But in all seriousness... I don't understand why these ducks are not more popular, they are quiet, very interesting looking, have great personalities, and they taste GREAT!

Glad to hear that. I believe I have 4 girls and 6 boys, so will be trying a few myself sometime this fall.

I've been looking at mine differently lately, lol. People come from over an hour away to buy mine, so I guess I should process one and see what they taste like.

I drove 3 hours ...one way...to get my scovies! I can't understand why they aren't more popular here in utah?

Lol, filet mignon is what I've been told.

My husband agrees..just without the bacon wrapped around it! Lol ;)

mine are pond ducks, but ive heard they are better for you than a pekin is. The only problem is that if you raise them in limitsd space, they grow so slowly! But yeah, I want to try it, but I would feel weird if I saw it alive first.

Yeah my hubby does the dispatching....I feel bad especially if I've raised them from babies. So I make him do the dirty work lol. After he is done they could be anyone's duck (and not my fluffy cute lil babies ;) )

I´ve despatched one, hated doing it. The meat was very good, though. One day I may get a grip of myself and dispatch another, but so far, there´s a feedstore locally that sells them on for me, and I don´t let the ducks breed too many... I prefer the eggs.

We slaughtered 2 males yesterday and it was a pretty stressful situation. But those of us who were supposed to survive, did. I may look into duck wax in the future though.

we have a dozen at the moment 3 of which are males

we processed some males last fall so the girls wouldn't get over breed

we DO NOT name them

we just say the lite colored one, the black one etc.

plucking is a real pain, so next year we figured on buying a plucker.

3 broodies are sitting at the moment so it looks like we should have ducklings come Sept.

Kristof is such a funny duck! Elsa (one of my anconas) has a drake feather, so looks like we have a drake in the bunch. Looke out to see a little curled feather.

Ok so she has stopped laying for the past three days, and she has 8 eggs, but she has been sitting on some of the eggs for 10 days, and then was adding more to her nest as she went, when will they hatch or will it be a staggered hatch and any tips for during incubation
Thanks Reece :)

From the picture kristof looks like a guy to :) can I see some pictures of him/her next to the Anconas to make sure

This is what someone else said. She (or he) was vent sexed twice so I think she is a she, but could be a he and then he will be dinner! Lol. But her feet touch when standing and aren't far apart or super thick like they say boys are and my Ancona who looks like has a drake feather quacks a lot, so who know. I figure when eggs come I'll know ;) will try to get a good one with te anconas
