Muscovys Are Laying !!!!!!

May girls started laying about a month ago and are still going strong (6 months old) - I have 15 ducks and have been getting 5 eggs every day. I ate all the eggs for the first few weeks thinking that they would stop, but I now have 50+ eggs in the incubator and plan on setting a total of 80 if the girls keep going. Out of the first setting, 80% are fertile and developing well. I have been candling daily and will keep replacing the duds untill I have 80 good eggs (all my Dicky will hold).

I didn't think I would be doing this until April, but what else do I have to do this winter.

I have an insulated outside brooding area so why not get an early start.

I haven't seen eggs yet ,but I did see mating going on today for the first time ever this early. I think our mild winters the last couple years has everyone confused.

I think it's the age, there only 6mths right? see mine did this the first winter too, as i said i think the girls have wised up(matured) and realize not a good idea, winter maybe slow to kick off but it's coming....

Now i admit i have 4 that are juvenile(6mths and three 4mth olds) but i hope they don't...

My 10 month old Scovy Hens have quit laying however my 21 month old Gals are still laying and one of them (Bleenie) is on a nest as we speak..she went broody a few days ago. That Girl has gone broody 5 times since she hit 6 months of age. I've only let her hatch out 2 batches, this will be her third. She had 14 eggs (half her's and half were Willow's) but our old dog helped herself to 7 of them so Bleenie has a "light" nest this time LOL. I also have 4 scovy ducklings that are a month old...my guess is 3 girls and 1 guy at this point.

This was my 11/2 yr old drake and his girlfriend, he may have been showing off for his son who was standing there watching it all.

Oh what fun! Mine have seemed to cease any breeding BUT the drakes got into it pretty good last week...

Man, my drakes are scary when they fight. All you see is birds flying and running to get out of their way. When I see that, then I start running with them. IT's CRAZY!!! :hide

I go and break it up, I usually snatch one up and carry him away, I have been known to be covered in mud when through though, always seems they like to get into it where it's muddy.

I've tried doing that and was almost injured with those sharp nails. When I would break it up, they would go right back at it. So, I let them work it out. It never gets too bad.

Well speaking of drakes, I'll speak about them ducks, last night one of my ducks was picking on her sister when they went in to bed, making her quite miserable. So I thought okay you meany I'll give you solitary confinement by your self and see how you like that, trying to pick that girl up was one big struggle, she got me good on the back of my hand with her claws didn't break the skin but made a blood blister. But I won and she spent the night alone. I doubt it made any difference she has been in solitary for at least 3 nights this week . I may just move her there permanently.
