I'm going to say a Clitocybe. Which does not cut it down much, but that family has similar characteristics to this guy. And yeah, I doubt it would be edible. Still interesting though... what does it smell like? Some of them have a very interesting smell (and some a very horrid smell)! Anyway, Clitocybe has a central stalk with no veil or volva and the gills can be notched or adnexed as these appear to be.

Didn't notice a smell. I'll check that tonight. It's under an oak tree. There appeared to be a very large older one as well.
I do have another morel coming at the compost pile

Oh, that would be awesome! Since you are going to go smell one... Take along a pocket knife and cut it straight in half the long way, so you can see if the stem is hollow and have a look at how the gills are attached. Size is helpful too... several of my books have a ruler printed along the back edge of the book. That would be extremely helpful in possibly cutting down on the possible species, but Clitocybe is a pretty huge family and they are notoriously difficult to differentiate. Still, you never know! It might be one of the more easily distinguished!

Will do. Thanks.

They are picking Morels in IOWA folks. So Minnesota should be coming up soon. Although mother nature has been less than cooperative getting ground temps right this week. A whole week of crusted ice and snow out there. Although, now, our lack of moisture issue is over with.

They have had some in Minnesota too but not many. I went looking the other day but nothing. This cold will set them back some. My Lilacs were about to bloom.
