Mushroom foragers

I've had some of my best morel harvests after long snowy winters, especially if we don't go hot and dry too quickly. Last year's below average harvest was second-third week of April. These were found on April 17. The earlier black morels just weren't happening last year.

Nice size ones too. Our black morel season here was extremely short last year and the yellow one was nearly a day long.

I am afraid of going from cold to hot ( and dry) so fast we will not get the intermediate temps and wetness we need. I should note I live in a very sandy area so dryness occurs in minutes.

Been meaning to ask about a mushroom I ran across in the UP last September. My first Lobster Mushroom. I understand it is a parasitic fungus. I see it can be edible, but have been cautioned about the remote possiblity of toxicity based on the host shroom. Any of you have experience with this one? A beautiful and fascinating fungus!

It indeed is a lobster mushroom. They are delicious with butter and garlic salt. Pick them early while they are crisp like a potato. Once several days old the bugs, maggots enjoy them too. Softer is less than palatable anyways.

I’ve too heard of the host warning. But have ate them anyways. Cooking would help with any toxicity. I think that’s how it works.
