Hi all,

Posting because I’m nervous and want to make sure I’m doing everything that needs/can be done. Our 1.4 yr old Pekin duck laid an extremely soft shelled egg the other day. You could hardly handle it without puncturing it. Today she laid what’s in the picture. Here’s the situation and what we’ve done so far:

For the last several months (I have a previous post on it) our drake has vastly favored our Pekin duck for mating, so much so that we’ve had to actively keep him away from her out of fear of injury as it’s more and more commonly happening on land. As of a couple months and some change ago, we hatched 7 of the original groups eggs. It’s looking to be 6 females and one male. We’ve had weeks and weeks of slow integration in the yard but the new group is still very antagonistic/territorial over the OG’s. We also lost a couple members so they’re outnumbered 7-4.

Our yard is, kind of crazy. It’s a tad over an acre and plenty of space to roam/graze. We’re learning it’s also FILLED with plants toxic to ducks. We try to pull as much as we can when we can. Our Pekin has a tendency to eat stuff she shouldn’t and it’s noticeable in her behavior (panting, squinty, lethargy, heavy breathing, the occasional vomit if it was a mushroom). When we see her struggling, we bring her inside to our little triage center which is a small octagonal soft pet cage. She gets all the amenities and seems pretty relaxed and at peace there. We’ve had a couple of those situations over the last several weeks.

Fast forward to the other day, super soft shell, and now today with the broken egg/ soft shell. Besides giving her calcium supplements, what’s the best thing we can do for her? Between aggressive mating, stress of newcomers, with a splash of toxic plants, are these likely causes? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

I think it’s called Oyster Shell. I purchase a small bag at Walmart when I had a female layer; now I have an all drake flock (only 3 left 😢). Anyway, I used to put a little in this little cat bowl I had next to their food and she loved it…never had a problem with eggs after that.
