Mushroom foragers

nice find!!

Chaga can be hard to find.

I did not know “reishi” had any uses. I had to go look it up. I have seen it and figured it worthless.
When I was a kid we used to pick reishi when they where hard red tops and white bottoms just to draw on the bottoms, can draw nice pictures on them never knew they had a use Lol.

That is the only use I knew for them... but having a hard time drawing a stick figure tree or a stick figure man that can be told about.

they are worthless to me.

Ever see pics of either when they are small and immature? I couldn't find anything.
Not very good photo . Best I had of a young chicken of the woods . What you had in your photo looks like the start of witches butter . A jelly type fungus .

So on chicken of the woods they repeat on some types of trees . In MN. it is red oak . Here in IL it is honey locust . Any other species of tree is a one time event . Hen of the woods is on oak and repeats . FYI if you have a likely host tree see if you can get a piece of mushroom to put around the tree . Past prime is fine for this . I did this with hen of the woods and have mushrooms every year . May take 2 or more years . My hen has not come up yet but recent rains should get them going .

I've been looking in areas with tons of oak, big old oak, dead oak, mostly red a few white here and there. It's bowhunting deer season here I'm wandering around thousands of acres with my bow, looking at trees :lau a big buck could have been standing next to me and I'm focused on trees :gig. I think if I find some chicken or hen I'll probably have a (well I can't say here lol)

Around here the chicken grows on the largest oaks. Also hen is around the base of trees close 2 ft in diameter and larger...

if that helps.

Any favorite recipes for puff balls? Guy at work says he likes to make them up like eggplant parmesan. I'm leaning towards just frying in butter. Found one today, I've seen plenty of them bigger one's just have never dared eat them lol , going to try this one about size of a softball.

I like them just fried on a burger or steak.. or in wild rice..

I am not sure what they are.. they look like oysters (kind of) . Or elm shroom..

what type of tree are they on.

try this app, it is not perfect but gets you pointed in the right direction. Watch the certainty percentage in upper right corner.

Maple , I thought maybe oyster but didn't dare touch them. We have had elm trees here but I think they are all dead from Dutch elm disease many yrs ago. I had a bad experience with cutting dead elm, standing dead is usually great burning wood. No bark on it 80yr old father in law knew what it was chunked up by the house. Said he couldn't remember if it was hard to split or didn't burn good, he was right on both...
