Mushroom Hunters?

I know! We are going into a monsoon season in north east Kansas! I don't remember it being like this until recent years.

A friend of mine from Lawrence (a fellow chicken person and avid morel hunter) called around 6pm to complain about the downpour, it was beautifully sunny here and we are just a bit over 30 minutes or so south of town. Hopefully that will persist because I'm planning a garage sale for tomorrow and Saturday and I still need to get out and pick those morels, that little patch from the video is just one of many here at the farm.

I heard through the grape vine that the Larryville chicken folks have secured the repeal of a pesky city ordinance!!! Way to go!

Living in Larryville with ducks and so far so good, except for one neighbor who didn't get the memo that ducks in town are A-OK!! Yes, rain is not so pleasant right now. But, ducks love the puddles in the backyard.

Anyone loving mushrooms will love this......check out my website under the gardening tab (or scroll down) and see the mushroom blocks (nonsense) they are selling at the Lawrence KS farmers market. BEAUTIFUL blocks for a mere $2.50!! Mine are almost ready to eat!

This is why I only hunt morels, I've read up on others and they are too tricky for me. My FIL showed me the differences, too. My neighbor hunts morels but he and his family also eat those brainy ones, you aren't going to find me eating shrooms that emit hydrazine

I will collect one other called "hen in the woods" by my sister's BF, but that one is also easy to recognize. None around here though.

The season is pretty much over for us. Pheasants Backs will grow through May though. Tomorrow night we are frying up the morels and Pheasants Backs we have. Gotta take pictures

My daughters and I went out today, since it didn't rain... we found nothing, nada, zip, zero.

I'm bummed.

Tomorrow the rain is supposed to start again. I'm hoping a good sunny day will bring them out?

You still have a chance, here is a photo from yesterday's 14.5 pound hunt (no, that isn't me and yes, those are his real facial features).... See the chicken babies? They were mad at me for not letting them out that day.

Anyway, we saw a fairly large number of freshly emerged morels that were no more than an inch tall.
