Mushroom Hunters?

lol they have a distinct look to them, you cant just eat 'any' ol' mushroom.. Ive always heard some of them are poisonous but, there are a few different kinds you can eat, you just need to know what they are, and what your looking for.

Can't wait for these tasty lil buggers!

Thanks for the reminder Attack Chicken. We live on four wooded acres and this will be our first spring. After todays rain maybe I should be on the lookout tomorrow!?!

Be very careful picking mushrooms. There are only a few that will kill you, there are lots that will make you wish you were dead. LOL There are lots of mycological societies that offer classes. Or get someone who knows to show you. There are also good books available. If you get one, get one with color pics. But remember to be VERY careful. I've often come home with a bunch of shrooms, that looked good in my pocket guide, and when I check my big book I find several that look the same. If in doubt throw it out. The ones that I pick are very distinctive looking and easy to id. I usually stay away from gilled shrooms-too many different ones. Also shrooms don't always look exactly the same. And shrooms in different regions can look alike. For example a small Deadly Aminita looks like a puffball, which is edible.

We love morels!! We like the corals in the fall but no where near as much as morels. It rained a couple inches over the weekend and it is suppose to really warm up here this week so surely we will have some!!

We have a long deep ravine in the woods that usually has some but not in several years

I think conditions will be perfect this year. What side of a hill/ravine do they do the best on? West or East? Thanks

I actually found morels in my yard under my rosemary bush I am so excited!!!

I am a complete fungophile and have been mushroom hunting for many years

this to me is a wonderful event! to actually have one of my favorite mushrooms growing right in my yard

years ago I had a giant morel sprout out of some burned firewood that had been dumped in my yard so this is actually the second time

what books do you like?
I have a huge collection of mushroom guides and books but my favorites are
All The Rain Promises and More
and Mushrooms Demystified both by David Arora

he is my fungal guru

in answer to "how do you know they are safe" I highly rec you go hunting with older folks ..always a good sign that someone knows what they are doing if they are alive and still hunting at 70+years of age! or join a local group ..books are great but nothing works like someone telling you how to id an edible ...and even better when you see them prepare and eat them and live to tell about it that is a good thing

puff balls are wonderful grilled or pan fried ..and come up in the spring as well if you can find a giant puff ball in good condition it is a score!....just be careful because the deadly amanita "death cap" when it first comes up resembles a puff ball but you can see in the inside it is not smooth it has the shape of a mushroom when you slice it ..study and study and have someone elder show you!!!

we have mushroom shows here in the Pacific NW

here is a great link to find out more
