Mushroom Hunting

I remember mushroom hunting with a Native woman when I was a kid. She was a friend of the family, and the mushrooms we picked were huge. I think we probably got bushels full. The only ones I've ever had the guts to pick on my own are puffballs and morels, because they are pretty unmistakable. Puffballs aren't really worth it though.

I don't know that they can do mushrooming here. I think it is probably too dry and too hot.

Great to see that you are mushroom hunting. I've done it for years. The morels are soooo good! Those small white puffballs can almost taste like popcorn when sauted in butter.

Okay, so dry-land fishing IS mushrooms, I couldn't remember if it was mushrooms or frogs

I was fascinated by the mushroom hunting bit of Omnivore's Dilemma, but alas I'm not brave enough to try... not that we don't see shrooms around here, they crop up, but I've been too leery of even googling them. Better Bock Bock Bock than tripping the light fantastic.

We've been finding them for weeks now here. This is a good shroom year for us! Last year was terrible, but we have found hundreds so far, and the season should run another two weeks!!!! Happy hunting to you!

I still have some dehydrated morels from last year, but I'm still gonna go out and try to find some fresh

I'm jealous! My hubby and I were just talking about morels yesterday. We don't have them until about the middle of May. Locals think it may be a great year for them around here. I hope so!! Thinking that I'd try my hand at drying some this year. Oooohhh, I can't wait!

This makes me SO excited. I'm going foraging on Friday. I've got spring morels and white truffles in the woods behind our house. Just in time for out spring poultry swap on Sat!!!

I would love to learn how to mushroom hunt. Any good books or website to look at? Also, does anyone know when mushroom season would be in the Northeast corner of CT?
