I have been enjoying the posts by http://farmama.typepad.com/farmama/
She
makes the most beautiful yarns.
Now I just need to locate a simple wheel.

Has anyone started with a hand spindle to learn first?
This would make the adventure much more economical to begin with.

I started with a drop spindle and it is super fun! Not nearly as productive as a wheel, though.

I got my Kromski from these folks and shipping was super fast and they give nice freebies with a wheel purchase.

I just saw this, but I hope the late answer helps.

I did start with a drop spindle. I ventured into different weight spindles and different types, as well as different fibers, before I purchased a wheel. I have an Ashford Traditional and I love it. I bought it used off E-bay and it came with lots of accessories. I've sold some yarns on my website and some locally.

If you start with a spindle, don't give up. At first it frustrated me, but then I found it very relaxing. Once I got the wheel, not only can I do much more in a shorter time, but it's like therapy for me. I ventured into dyeing as well. It adds a whole other dimension to the design process.

Keep us updated on your decision!
