Muticus.... Cristatus.

I think Dany is protesting the killing of the peacocks, but it turned into a discussion of peafowl killing in general.
That is true that we can't say if the peafowl are killed for just the feathers or if it is also for their meat. I am not against killing them for meat, it is just I worry that they are often killed just for their feathers.

I wasn't claiming that the lady who did those peafowl taxidermy mounts was killing the birds just for taxidermy - I was using her taxidermy as an example of bad looking peacock taxidermy because of the strange handling of the peacock neck and face. I just think it is funny how peacock mounts cost a lot of money yet a lot of them are not well done. Perhaps they are using a turkey as the base and not altering the base enough to make it look more like a peacock.

As for the taxidermists buying peacocks at auction - It might not sound believable but at a large auction a peafowl breeder attended and noted that some people were really buying up lots of the peacocks. After questioning the people doing a lot of the buying, they learned that they were buying them for taxidermy. At an auction you can get a peacock for less than $150 dollars. Some people have had really good luck getting a nice looking peacock for $50 or less at an auction. I believe some of the large peafowl breeders bring their birds they were not able to sell off to these auctions. I was told of a peafowl breeder that gives their extra peafowl they can't sell to a taxidermist.

Anyways sorry for derailing the thread and causing any confusion.

Which I second the auction part, not with the taxidermy part just the auction can sometimes have nice birds and a cheap price. I've seem some nice Pied peacocks go for about $45-$75 and it's a male with a train. Now what happens to the peacock I have no idea. I've seen some nice Black Shoulders go for $20 at an auction and they are nice 2 or 3 year olds.

In my area blue peafowl are pretty cheap at the auctions, unless they are a speciality/new variety. I never see good greens a few decent spauldings sometimes but usually most of the birds are low end/cull birds. Some here on craigslist ask and get more money but, usually the folks who pay craigslist prices are novices. I find my best deals through networking over the years and this forum is a huge and valuable network where you can meet a ton of good people and learn a whole lot when you thought you knew it all. A good reputation lasts years but a bad one can last a lifetime. I miss the old school "Trade days" where people would rather trade a bird than barter on a price. I know a few people that have bought pheasants just for the feathers but I never ask about what happens to the birds because it was non of my business. My observation is that after seeing so many really bad pea mounts theres not many taxidermists who would tackle a pea nor would they stand in line at an auction to prove they are the best "pea mounter" plus most of the peas that go through the auctions I go too have trains that are destroyed enroute.

PS. Every post in this thread has educational value and facts are facts for sure.

Minx Fox and Birdrain92 thanks for your insights. Animal cruelty is just that, Animal Cruelty and should never be tolerated by anyone of us that observes it occurring. In addition to my extremely spoiled India blue peafowl I also raise beautiful boer goats. Even though they may be destined for a dinner plate they are raised humanely and maybe even spoiled until that day comes. As long as they are humanely processed and nothing wasted, then I do not see that as cruel. To see true cruelty by humans to beautiful goats just check out deformed hoof videos on the web. Be warned they will leave you sad. I do not see killing large numbers of peafowl in India as cruel as long as those acts were legal to do and done humanely as possible with nothing being wasted.

Minx Fox our livestock and poultry auctions very seldom have peafowl for sale as I attend them regularly so different parts of the country might have different style auctions. As the new editor of the UPA magazine the question I might ask you is where does the cruelty blame lie? Does it lie with the taxidermist or any person at the auction who is purchasing with the intention of dispatching the bird or does it lie with the breeder who hatches so many peafowl that he needs to use a low value auction in the first place?

This is just my opinion but I feel the humane killing of an animal and the use of that animal for its meat, fur, feathers, or other parts is not cruel as long as it is legal and was not done just to kill the animal.

You're welcome. Just my opinion because I get asked this question a lot from some students in my school. I get asked by some students in my school, "How can I eat animal meat when I know where it came from and grew attached to it?" When you raise the animal that you know is going to be butchered it brings a whole new view and respect to that. You get really attached to them but for me it brings a whole new respect for them. You know what it takes to get them there and you know how much time and effort you have to put into them so you treat it with more respect than someone who believes their food just comes out of the grocery store. Ok, I just had to give my opinion on it.

And a valued opinion for sure. We also cannot eat anything We've raised except the eggs. We ate one rooster years ago and it was tough as a boot and we felt horrible so we have decided to buy chicken from the store from then on.

Chickens are good until they are 4 years old. Once they are getting close to 4 or older they are really tough.
