Hi everyone!
I received a new incubator for Christmas, and I was itching to use it, so... I started it up.
It holds 22 eggs. So far, it has done well holding temperature at 99.5 (I have a second thermometer in there to be sure). Humidity was a bit difficult to figure out, and seemed to fluctuate a lot before I set my eggs, so I moved it to a different location, and it's been better.
I have a few really funky mixes to hatch:
I have a Rhode Island Red/Polish mix hen from last summer, in a pen with silkies and a silkie/frizzle cochin mix.... I checked a few of her eggs to see if they were fertilized, and they were, so I put three of her eggs in the incubator.
In another area, I have a blue laced red wyandotte roo, and I have a black copper maran hen and a blue copper maran who both lay dark brown eggs. I put 3 of their eggs in the incubator.
The rest are silkies, and frizzled cochin/silkie mixes. I had a red frizzled cochin roo in a pen with a white silkie last summer. I hatched 3 of their eggs. I have a mostly black with a gold neck hen, looks very silkie-like, but smooth feathers, an all white smooth feathered hen that looks like the silkie, and the male, who is very silkie-like, but red smooth yet some are slightly silkied looking feathers. There are also white, blue, splash, black and blue partridge full-blooded show quality silkies. I'll be separating them all soon for the spring, just easier to care for them in our cold winter in one large pen.
