MY 27 WEEK OLD HEN STARTED CROWING THIS MORNING!!

We're positive. The other one developed earlier than this one. Roosters can have varying comb size, so whether one's is bigger than the other's doesn't matter. This one also likely didn't crow until now because the other one is dominant. Beta roosters don't crow as much or sometimes not in all in the presence of the alpha. And the crow sounded weird because he's just starting and needing practice.

He also has long, shiny, pointy hackle and saddle feathers, which hens don't get. And he's double barred, which is impossible for any barred hen to be. Only males can be double barred because the gene is sex linked.

Ugh! I am mourning the loss! Thank you, everyone, for your wisdom. I need a stiff drink ...

Both cockerels - the new crower may not be trying to breed any hens because the Alpha brother would knock the feathers off of him. Generally the lessor male will not in crow in the presence of an alpha roo for the same reason- but, maybe he is getting confident .

I think the beta is getting confident because I've been having to put the alpha in his place whenever he gets the bright idea to charge me. I'll pick him up if he tries to attack me and I'll hold him under my arm and carry him around, making sure all the hens see it. And if he is mad about being held and still tries to bite, I gently turn him over in my arms and grab his feet and hang him upside down for a few moments and then put him down. The beta has been watching. lol
