I look out the window and I see two of my hens with one chick each same age fighting. Never seen any of my hens fight. I broke up the fight, which was hard to do by spraying them with the hose and that didn't work so I had to push them away with a broom. Went back into the house and look out and another hen with a older chick is fighting with the same hen. What is going on?

Broody hens make for some flock drama whether they have chicks or not. They are hormonal and primed to protect their offspring. If the fighting becomes too much it's best to pen one up.

Sometimes a broody hen fights about anything to protect her chick. Sometimes a broody with chicks may try to harm or kill another chick. But usually when broody hens fight one wants to take over raising all the chicks herself.
