My 4-H Poultry Leader Said....

CarlaRiggs - I was sitting right next to the leader and even asked him to clarify in what he meant by "shake & bake". I currently use DE myself and have only had 1 problem when we had a huge load of staw come in for the winter. Unfortunately, the straw was loaded with mites - a red flag should have popped up when I saw all the white feathers in it. I did use Sevin to treat those, but only under their wings, stomach, and vent area. Plus I pulled everything out of the coop and dusted. They were gone in less then a week.
So sorry what happen to you, therealsilkiechick, - glad you pulled out of it.
Thanks for all the feedback - I just wanted people to be aware of what some 4-H leaders are teaching our kids. It's a good thing us parents tag along to meetings.

Wow That makes me really angry that people might listen to his advice and use it, I hope they dont. and I hope he doesnt do it to his chooks either, hopefully they shut their eyes and mouths if he sticks them in a bag.
I use a powder on mine however i pour it over them and rub it into their tummies and under wings, but I wont let it get into their eyes or nostrils if I can help it.
I only have 12 chooks to treat, I wont put them into a bag as it would be awful for them.,

Surely the Sevin dust must come with warnings about those issues. Also a warning that it illegal to use it ( because it is a pesticide) in a way that is inconsistant with the labeling.

That is sad. Does the 4-H leader even own chickens ??

Best of luck!! Me personally I wouldn't go to that group...and taking it over would only be stressful in my opinion if he is the area leader (I think you said he was filling in)

WOW! Well, it's a good thing that you were there to hear it, and I feel badly for his animals if that's the way he treates them.

Maybe the guy is simply misinformed? Perhaps you should let him know the proper thing to do for mites, direct him to BYC, and let him know how much useful and CORRECT information is on here.

Hate to hear folks putting him down - maybe he just doens't know any better. Yes, I definitely feel we all have responsibilities as caretaker of critters to be educated and do right by them. But, just because I believe that doens't mean everyone else does, or that it's the only opinion out there.

This guy needs HELP - hopefully, once directed to a GOOD source of information, he'll change his tune. He must enjoy animals, or he wouldn't be doing what he's doing, right? Or, am I being too optimistic?

I agree that 5% sevin dust works well for mites....however the bag method described here is bad information and should be explained to the 4-H group that the birds should be dusted in a well ventilated area ( preferably outside ). I dust my coop, my nest boxes, any cracks in the coop, the dusting holes, and my flock. I do this twice a year and never had any lice or mites, or sick chickens. Common sense goes a long way here.

WOW, that's all I can say! My leaders weren't always right on top of things, but I can sure say they never put the birds directly in danger like that!

Heidi,
You must have been a little speechless to hear a grown man give this advice to the kids. I agree that it would be a good idea to kindly set him straight. I can't imagine any animal would be normal after being shaken about in a bag of Sevin. I wonder where he received this pearl of wisdom, anyway?
