My 4 pound Yorkie got bit by a rat.

In response to Stacykins, yes I did pop the pus pocket while feeling the lump. I must have caught it early on. The vet wouldn't do anything more than I am doing, except charge me a boatload of money. I do wound care at the hospital, so I see some really interesting stuff. His wound is healing frrom the inside out & the wound bed is generating new tissue & is a healthy color. He has no temp & I have topical antibiotics on it. The vet is in my contact, but only for things I can't handle. Thank you for inquiring.

Sounds to me like you're doing a great job on the wound. He may not appreciate you now, but hey.... it's hurting you more than it is him, right? LOL

. I hope Duncan recovers quickly and is back on rat patrol soon!

That is such a cute little dog. There is no way I can ever let my kids see this thread. Speedy healings for the little guy.

It is actually not a surprise that your Yorkie is going after rats because originally they were bred as ratters on board ships and in towns and villages where rats were such a huge problem. Rats have always been disease bearing rodents which is why many terrier breeds were developed. It is kind of funny to see the way people treat Yorkies today, carrying them around in purses and putting bows in their hair. Personally I don't like Yorkies but how demeaning for a tough little rat killer!!

One of the reasons I got him was because they are rat killers. He has attacked a coon before and escaped unharmed. Lucky, but I am sure the coon was just as schocked as I was. When he shakes his toy squirrel it is easy to see that a rat really doesn't stand a chance. While I have had many different size dogs, I can't say I am partial to any 1 breed. It is pathetic to see people dressing yorkies up & carrying them like toys.

Given the amount of rats he has killedd so far, I am happy this is his first injury. He is tough & not afraaid of much! Just me when it is time for a bath!
