Now, now, Redhen. we're talking "religiously" unclean; in large part because they are scavangers and carnivores (well, omnivores). Think about it...are you ADVOCATING that we eat pigs?

Relax, I eat pork and love it sometimes too much. Unclean is the biblical description, pigs are very smart and fun animals to raise. Besides aren't all animals santified now anyhow? and yes I prefer pork over duck any day not sure about chicken though it is hard to beat.

Teacher's Point of View:
I have several religions in my class, some don't say the pledge, don't have parties, don't celebrate the holidays everyone else does, don't eat certain foods etc. I am familiar with the Jewish restrictions, but have also dealt with those that still eat whatever they want and say that the food has nothing to do with how they feel about the religion. As was stated before most children know very well what they can't eat and will usually say something, but most 6 year olds are not going to want to be left out during something like that and will "forget" to say something. I'm sure the teacher didn't go home and sit behind a cauldron cackling about serving that little Jewish girl as much ham as she could poke down her throat lol,, (that is being light-hearted before you fire back). As hard as I may try in my classroom I cannot plan every single lesson around religious beliefs, that is why there is separation of Church and State and we are not allowed to pray in school. We have to be careful about Christmas, Heaven's forbid we teach about the real Halloween, All Hallow's Eve.
Just talk to the teacher and say by the way I know it's too late now, but we are Jewish and we don't eat Ham, so please in the future make sure you have an alternative available for those who need something different. If I can teach with adults who still think you have to have a rooster for a hen to lay eggs, then I'm sure we cannot expect every teacher to know every single restriction and belief of all the religions in the world.
I would feel horrible if I knew I accidentally served a Jewish student pork, but I also know I'm human.

Those animals WOULD live in their own filth... pigs will NOT live in their own filth, unless they HAVE to...

Very true redhen!

I am pretty educated but apparently not about orthodox jewish religion. I would not know the dietary requirements that you face as such, probably should go over the menu with the teacher.
