My $60 dollar colt -May walk away from this opinions PLS!!

I appreciate what you are doing with the colt,,and it is good he is getting some attention..but IMO there is no way in heck that sire of his should have ever been a breeding horse,,he should have been gelded as a foal..he is not in any way stud material..but keep up the work on the colt,,good for you.

Lorie, his sire as a youngster was a Canadian national champ, Scottsdale top 10, and lots of other stuff...
BUT I think it was as a very young horse, he should have been gelded, he is a pretty nasty horse too.
Where he is at, the owner is free leasing him to this colts breeder. She wanted him to have a forever home where he would be used as a stud. And taken care of.
Well yes that is happening, not well but its happening.
And the owner said he MUST be advertised at a 15.3 HH horse ....

I think, but am not sure, I will have to check, that Cal (the colt I am getting) is the only bay colt of his.. there are 3 other colts (untouched and nearly 2 as well) but are chestnut.
And 2 fillies in the pasture next door. AND 2 weanlings. And the breeder just traded a mare for YET another stallion, she has 2 breeding stallions, a 3 yr old stud colt and 4 coming 2yr old
stud colts... But hey.. free breedings!!! lets make MORE!!.

Please think seriously about what you are taking on before you're in too deep. As you're probably aware we've found ourselves in a sticky situation with an old horse and having to move. If he were younger the decision would be even harder, even more so if he were younger and unusable.

If you're in a position that you can no longer keep him, it would be extremely tricky to place this horse. It is sad that he has issues, it is sad that he was created in the first place and those involved continue to add to the problem, but bailing out those people by taking their cast-offs might not necessarily be a good idea. You have a big heart, and I understand why you want to help him, but the breeder's actions are disgusting.

The colt's owners sire lied to you. He's not a Canadian Nat'l Champion and if he ever did anything at Scottsdale, it wasn't a placing. His Canadian title is a Top 10

Part of me wants to walk away from this horse. The other wants to make sure he gets a good start and a good home...
So now I am torn.

Where are you getting some of those championships from?

The Elixir didn't have a HUGE show career but he definitely did have some worthy wins, although all the classes he was ever taken in were halter classes.

The choice is yours, of course, about the horse. If you can give him a good home, do it, as there are not enough homes for horses now. If you can get him broke and sound enough for even light riding, he'll be much better off.

I am not impressed with the owner's stallion if he has a underbite fault......that's inherited. The stallion should have been gelded.

Two, if you are a member of the Arabian Horse Association, you can find anything under the stallions show records. I agree with Mikewrangler, he is NOT a Canadian National Champion from what I see the printout. I don't like the fact the owner is lying about it either just to get a selling tactic going there.

If it was me for what's it is worth, I would walk away and hope for the best for the colt. Who knows what else the owner may be lying about the colt.

My opinion
You've seen him, worked with him, do you like him?
If so, get him. So the owner lied about the stud, you're gelding him and paying for a coggins test, it's not like someone's trying to bilk you out of $$$

His back may or may not stay the same/get better/get worse. Honestly, I don't know how much you weigh, but looking at the pics, if you are of average weight, don't start riding him till he's 4, made sure the saddle fit well and put in an hour a day on him (most pleasure horses don't get that much) I'd guess he'd be fine. If you wanted him as a pleasure driving horse I'd guess he'd be fine. If you wanted him for competition anything even at the lowest levels, I don't think he'd be suited.

Ask yourself, if I knew nothing about him, saw him at that auction, handled him for a few minutes and liked him as well as I do having worked with him, would I risk $60 on him?
