My African geese (2 ganders) are sick what do I need?

You can use Epernix pour on it is used like front line for dogs and is safe it will also kill internal parasites. all but round worms. I have used it but you'll need to keep him out of the water over night, like treat him before bedtime then put him up so he can't get into water till 12 -24 hrs can't remember that part but if you can keep him out of the water long enough it will kill the lice/mites. LF chicken get 7 drops on the skin at neck and 1 drop under each wing. so that's for a 7-10 lb bird. I used it on my water fowl one year in Jan since that was when they wouldn't have any bathing water and I used 12 drops on my ganders neck .

Where can you get Epernix? Is it an online order product? I would also like to get some.

Thanks so much Miss Lydia!! I will absolutely be getting some of that immediately! I think I can handle that with not much of a problem with a little help to keep him still or occupied while I put it on him. Poor thing, no telling how long he has had that problem! Henry never shook his head like that, only Scarface does that, but I'm sure if Scarface had them that Henry had them too, and with the rough winter we had around here plus that problem could very well have made him so weak and stressed. Never saw him scratching or anything like that though, just looked really tired and depressed and moving around slowly, not lively like usual. I'm still so sick about it and it's still so painful.
I have ordered stuff from Jeffers before and they are here in Alabama I think, so I get my orders pretty quickly, so that's a good thing. I will pen him up in the large pen over where we have just Harry rooster and Red Riding Hood at. They are closed in their houses at night so it shouldn't be a problem except that Scarface has never been penned up before and certainly won't like it a bit. He's used to being able to go all over the yard at night, and usually sleeps close to the door of the other chicken pen watching out all night, but he is very liable to get into the pool during the night if he's not penned up. I will order that stuff today! Thanks!!

You need to most likely treat your whole flock treat the coops/houses treat the houses with poultry dust or neem oil sprayed into cracks and crevices I like to use neem because it's can be sprayed and to me is better and no dust to breath in for your or the flock I spray in the morning and let everything air out then let everyone back inside in the eve, after everyone has been treated. also and burn or haul off old bedding to get it away from the birds. bantams get 3 drops on the neck LF 7drops.
I do 7 drops on my ducks and 10 on my drakes and 14 on my geese. also with treating egg layers there is no egg with drawl.

I couldn't find it at Jeffers or Revival Animal Health, but did a google search and turned out Amazon had it. $45.99 for 8 oz, didn't have any smaller. Hope the life time of the stuff lasts a while since I will no where near use all that anytime soon. Scarface weighs probably about 10- 12 pounds, 14 drops seems like a lot. Would that still be correct for that weight? Do you use the dropper supplied or do you use another type of dropper to apply, just wondering what size drops if you don't use the one supplied with the product. So scared of putting stuff on them, I'm scared to do anything to them especially now that I tried and failed, just always second guessing myself. But dusting would not be an option for him. It would never work. Doing the drops is going to be hard enough to do. When you say that bantams get 3 drops on the neck LF 7 drops. What do you mean by LF (large fowl?) Hate to seem dumb, but I'm just not up to date on the abbreviations of everything. Don't do a lot of texting either, so I still have trouble trying to figure out what all those letters mean. Took me forever to figure out what ACV was!!! Also what is neem oil. Never heard of it before and where would you get it, would TSC have it? About how much is it, is it expensive. Couldn't believe that Epernix was so high. Wouldn't have been if they'd had a smaller size available, but I get that it's a double action product, so that's good. Someone said that it wouldn't kill round worms though. Guess you just have to take a chance that they don't have those. Does it kill every other kind except those, like does it kill tape, gape and all the others except round worms? I so wish I had known about this before Henry died. It just makes me so sick that he probably died because I was too stupid to properly take care of him. Mama actually had him for years before I came here to stay and help take care of everything, including helping her, so I just figured since she'd had them so long that they had already found out everything about their care, since we've never had a problem with them before. I had no idea that you had to treat them for worms and parasites. Didn't even know anything about taking care of chickens. Never had any before I came here, so I didn't know anything about that either. I'm finding out now though. She didn't know it either. Thanks so much for your help. I will probably be depending on your help from now on with advise about their care. Things are going to be different around here, and I'm going to get these animals back to good health, with y'all's help!

I can´t help with the epernix thing, but just to say that ignorance (in the best meaning of the word) causes so many problems. Here, a neighbour of mine has taken in a pup that someone dumped outside her house. She´s nver had a dog, but wants to look after this one. I talked to her about parasites, as she could see fleas on it...ok, fleas all dead now. I mentioned to her about worms, and she haad no idea. I asked her who worms the cats in her place (mother-in-law has a mountain of cats, lives in her own house, but on the same farm), and my neighbour said no-one!!! So she had a little lesson about worms.....she went off the same day to go and get some stuff.
I expect Harry was steadily going down for a while.
Just read as much as you can on here, and although bear in mind that some os this stuff is guess-work.. You´ll soon figure out who knows their stuff. Also, there are some very good books about keeping poultry. That would be a good investment. And if you don´t understand a term, just ask. I hope all goes well for Scarface and you. And well done on your determination to get them all fit.

Jeffers livestock catalog page 6 Epernix 250 ml 37.49 since Scarface is as light as my drakes and they weigh 10-12 lbs use 10 drops and i have just a reg dropper I saved from something I had bought it's just small drop has the bulb type top you just squeeze and count out the drops, this stuff is very safe it's the only reason i would use it. Epernix won't kill round worms but Wazine will but it has an egg withdrawl period of 14 days I believe, haven't used it in a long time. There are other wormers also just thought the Epernix might have been the easiest way to go for Scar face since you need to treat in and out parasites. Once you treat him then do another treatment in about 10 days to kill the nits that have hatched. LF is Large Fowl sorry. Keep the epernix tightly closed it will last a long time. I transfer some into my dropper bottle too so no fear of accidently spilling any or having a chicken get loose and knocking it over[ has happened her]

What i do is catch my goose put them between my legs head facing forward and parting feathers on the neck dropping drops. this stuff has to make skin contact. ain't easy on water fowl but can be done. you can get someone to hold him and you apply too. He'll get over the humiliation of being caught and treated quick and feel so much better with all the lice gone. Neem oil I bought at Amazon but can be found at many garden centers I have a gallon pump sprayer I keep only for this and it takes 2 Tab to 1 gal on very warm water, since it's an oil you have to use warm water to mix it good by shaking the day lights out of the sprayer and during spraying also, then after using it I wash the sprayer out real good for next time which i do monthly during warm months be sure to spray roots real good to top and bottom. Epernix kills all parasites except round worms. Listen we all have a learning curve when taking care of our animals, and I have lost some because i didn't know what to do and some times even when you try to help they still die. It's very hard we all know. But hopefully you can help Scar face. till you get the Epernix pour on treat him with some really good poultry vitamins to keep his blood from being too anemic. I'll go get you a few links with info on Neem oil.

Forgot to mention those that live in warm moist climates have to worm more often and treat for pets more often too. Also make sure there is no standing water around other than what you are changing often since West Nile is such a threat now to us and our animals. from Mosquito's .

Once you get the papasites under control you might want to look into this product, This is what I use now for worming.. Verm-X

We all make mistakes and unfortunately our animals pay the price. My parents have a 16 year old pug, she is almost completely blind and deaf due to her age. But the poor dog also has painful feet. We didn't know we had to trim her nails, none of our big breed dogs had ever had nail trims and never had a problem. But Sassy, the pug, her nails grew so much that her paws are deformed now and she has a painful limp. I did research and discovered the problem and now cut all my dogs nails every 2 weeks minimum. For Sassy though it is painful for her to get her nails trimmed, but we do it to prevent her paws from becoming worse. It is sad, but we can use the knowledge to make things better for our other animals.

Yes, it's very sad when these things happen. As they say "a LITTLE knowledge, is a dangerous thing." So is NO knowledge! I can't believe that my Step Dad didn't do research on chickens and geese before he got them to see what all they need. Been only feeding Scarface cracked corn, but of course, he does eat grass and thrown out ends of stuff like tomatoes, lettuce, turnip greens, ect every now and then. In the summer time he gets cantalope, watermelon tommie toes, which he loves!! and all kinds of stuff like that that we get from the fruit stands around here, and we grow some ourselves also. I don't know what poultry vitamins are, except the electrolyte stuff that you mix in water. Wonder if that's what qualifies for vitamins or if there's something else. I've been putting a fish oil tablet oil on his greens that I've been giving him, but he doesn't like it. He will eat all the others and leave that piece for last. Yesterday I went out to see if he had eaten it all, and the piece that I had put the fish oil on was floating around in his water bin, all the rest was gone. He's too smart for his britches!!! LOL
barnie.gif
I'm hoping that putting the drops on him won't bee too much for his system since he already has the infection and he's been on the Tetracycline now for about 4 or 5 days now, also weakened by the lice and maybe even worms. I just hope it doesn't make things worse on him to put that on him. Miss Lydia said that its safe though, so the lice are probably worse on him than that would be, I hope! I would just die myself if something happened to him because of something I've done. Just as bad as Henry dieing because of something I DIDN'T do!!

It is a terrible thing when people have pets and don't care for them. It really makes me mad. I was so mad at myself for not being aware of things. I had no idea, I figured Mama knew what all you were supposed to do since they've had them so long, and Nip usually did massive amounts of research for everything he ever set out to do. I am going to invest in that book about chicken and waterfowl diseases and their treatments, that I saw on a site of someone's ranch that raises and hatches waterfowl and chickens and everything, even lambs, goats, German Shepard dogs, and other animals too. It was about $40.00, so after spending so much on all the stuff I've gotten for these animals lately, I'll have to save up for a while to get it. Hope my Etsy shop picks up and does good. The better it does, the faster I'll be able to get the book. So many irons in the fire!!! LOL It's been doing pretty good though for a start, since that's how I was able to get the stuff I have gotten so far.
yesss.gif
Don't think I could make a better investment than that book though, at least I could maybe head things off before they get bad, if I just knew what I was supposed to do for preventative care. :)
