My African geese (2 ganders) are sick what do I need?

Harry, I just called the emergency hospital at Auburn University and explained your situation. He said he will make some calls and try to find you a vet in your area to see your ganders.

You are just full of awesome Utah. I am just a lab tech, give me blood, poop, and tissue samples and I can tell you what it is and what is the right medicine. But not dosage I'm afraid. The best thing would be for a vet to take samples and treat the gander there, instead of experimenting from afar. I will repeat a word of caution though, most vets and doctors don't know how to properly diagnose fungal infections. It's not part of required learning for them. Make sure to ask them to check for it.

I only started treating my dogs/cats in house cause the vets here are outrageous. they want surgery for every little thing, or keep them for observation, and they too refuse to see "livestock". So now I am on a quest to learn how to keep my chickens and geese healthy without those buttheads.

Harry, I hope your ganders get good treatment and makes it. It would be wonderful to see photos of them all healthy and happy!

Yes, Starfire, that's also where I am now. Just doing everything myself. Okay Iain, I called Patrick and he said he really couldn't help or tell me anything except to go with your advise with the shot thing, so I guess that's what I'm going to try to do. Should I discontinue putting the Tetracycline in the water when I get started with the shots? I would assume yes, since that would be like a double dose of two different kinds of antibiotics at once to continue that treatment. I will be going to the tractor supply today to get the supplies I will need. Too bad they don't sell courage!!! I'm going to need a extra large dose of that, but if I can just conquer my own fears, I will be ready for anything I think and will then be able also to treat my chickens better also. So far I've been treating them with antibiotics orally with a dropper, but they are way more docile than these geese are. I will post an let y'all know what's happening and post some better pictures of the facial lesions whenever I can get some help to catch them, which will be later on when husband gets back, so it may be a while, but later on this evening after I go to town to get the supplies while he is gone. Going to also try to fix a place to put them in for temporary containment while trying to treat them. All those praying folks on here, please do that for me and my geese, and I will be very grateful for that also. So indebted to you all for all you do for us on here. It really does help, even the moral support is invaluable!!!! I will let y'all know what's happening asap.

Darn Alabama boondocks. I never thought Utah of all places would be on the cutting edge in waterfowl veterinary medicine! Look forward to the report once you have gotten your supplies, birds caught, weighed, examined and pictures taken.

Good luck!!!

Dont forget to clean the face of the 1 with lesions with betadine. It will help. If they are pus filled, draining would help as well. You can look at an earlier post of mine about how to drain and care for them if that is the case.

Penacillian is a broad spectrum antibiotic where tetracycline is a narrow spectrum antibiotic. So yeah, I would stop the tetracycline if switching to penacillian.

I would have a helper hold the geese while you inject, and wear gloves just in case. Get new gloves for each goose to avoid spreading contagions from 1 to the other if possible.

Good luck and best wishes!

Thank you so much, I will need all the luck I can get! Once I've conquered my fear of giving a shot, I will be so much more capable of doing all my own animal care. The experience I've had with a lot of vets is the same as Starfire's. More money the longer they can keep, observe, treat ect. Like a lot of doctors these days, just wanting to do all kinds of unnecessary tests ect. just for the money, and I guess, job security. I don't trust them. Yeah, guess I need to move to Utah. It really is pitiful around here the lack of things and help options among other things. So, off to the tractor supply in a little bit to get my supplies and such, will take me a few hours though since I'm in the middle of nowhere land.

Harry rooster im so sorry that vets near you dont do birds like geese :/
But theres always one vet so look hard because those africans look very nice!
My sisters a vet and she dosent do birds but geese ducks and exotic and a few wild birds so im lucky because theres no other vet that does geese near where i live but the vets you went to could atleast have done something to the poor gander! I just dont understand! >:-/
