That is an awful thing to witness. I had it happen to me once and it made me so sick.

When I used to order chicks I always waited until the first part of April to get them....I always figured that no matter how many chicks there are if it's 15 degrees out like it was here this morning it's just too cold for them. I think the Hatcherys should limit shipping to us who are in colder areas until later in the season so the chicks....and us don't have to go thru stuff like this.

jjthink I don't think what was done was out of cruelty and why should she make a stink at the highest levels. We have to understand when ordering in the winter that when the storms are too bad the planes can't fly and roads may be closed and the trucks can't move. These things happen in the winter, just ask the folks trapped at the airports also. Not much to be done. Chickenranchwife good luck with the next batch better weather is on the way. I just got off the phone with Ideal and Welp's. I moved them both back to March 10th and 12th...hopefully it will be a bit warmer by then, though being in South Dakota you never know. CRW, you are way north of me yet, so I'm sure you are even colder then us, and it's cold here-mine were scheduled to ship next week but I just don't see it warming up that much. Have I ever mentioned I hate winter?

I am so sorry for the loss. That is just wrong. If the P.O. is willing to ship chicks, they should train their people to know how to treat them. It's not like it's rocket science. I know they are really busy, but geez...

We are in central MN and I just went down to pick up our chicks from McMurray this last Saturday. We drove the 5 hours each way to pick them up in hopes of keeping all the cuties alive...It was -18 when we left our house and it was a blizzard when we were driving back. The temp never got above 23 degrees without windchill.

So far so good, but there are 115 chicks with 6 heat lamps on them!

Better luck this next time around. I am sure you will get great chicks from McMurray. This was a bad fluke.

I am so sorry for your loss. Sometimes at the PO you get smart people. Other times you get people who dont know what fragile means or handle with care. I hope the next set comes to you 100% healthy

I'm having my order shipped from McMurray for a March 3 delivery. I only live a 2 1/2 hour drive from the hatchery so if weather stays like this I think I will call them and pick them up personally. It has been terribly cold here in Iowa this winter as well - 5 degrees today w/a -20 wind chill. Come on warm weather!!!!!!!!

I agree with her. If I was driving a USPS truck in cold temps I would put live "cargo" up front with me so they could be warm. Period. If it were me, I would complain to USPS that this could have made all the difference and that they should take such measures if they are going to transport live "cargo". If they refuse, and declare an "at your own risk" policy, then any of us who okay shipments in bad weather conditions are complicit in the death of any birds.
