My Babies are Gone

I can not believe this! I am so sorry for your loss. I would question what happened to the last ones as well.

The lights and locks, letter to paper,a fence, are all great ideas!

I know what you mean about the rat terrier. I have a chihuahua and ignore her half the time she barks because she would bark at a blowing leaf!! My Grandmother had dobies so I am familiar with them too. Her dogs were the biggest babies I ever knew. I had a German Shepherd that we had to put down last spring and let me tell you, I felt totally safe with that dog here. Very well trained and a great protector of our property lines but a baby with us and our children.

It is terrible that we need to worry about these things these days. I might have to go back in time. My own garden, my own chickens, my watch dog, and my pistol!

Get a couple guineas...they are awesome alarms and LOUD about it too.

I would make sure your coops and run are secure, add padlocks and such if need be and stake a large rabid rottweiller by their coop with a LOOOOOOONG lead...Post a sign that clearly states...chicken thieves and trespassers will be fed to the dog or shot if the dog misses them!

I cannot stand a thief.

I am so sorry you lost your babies.

Unfortunately, Royal Blue, your right. There is just too much garbage going on. And when you live in the Countryside, no one seems to give a darn....they don't put too much emphasis on livestock, horses and poultry, saddles, tack, etc., heck sometimes they dont even put any emphasis on anything that is stolen because they know burglaries are very hard to solve, or at least very hard to catch the thief with the items. I guess thats why Florida now made a law that you can carry a gun in your car. Yes, A dog is the very best deterant according to a homicide investigator I went to college with. So get a trained dog, keep him confined, put up signs and let him go at whoever thinks they can just walk into your property and take whatever they want.

HOWEVER, if I were you, I would check with parents in the area to see if their children showed up with any NEW chicks lately. Also, watch for predators because I have seen Raccoons pick right through chicken wire etc., and just pull off pieces of the chickens and eat them until they are full. And foxes have been very bad this year around SE GA.

I have worried about theft of my chickens too. I have some pretty white orps in a tractor that are visible to everyone and I let my chickens free range. Thing is, I only let my salmon faverolles that are a little beat up looking free range at the moment, so I don't know if anyone passing by would think twice about them anyway. The thought is always there though and I pay close attention to things that my dog barks at in the night.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss, it is just terrible what people will do.

Letter to editor good.
I'd put up wanted posters of the chickens, like missing kids. If they're not in a freezer someone has to have seen them.

One side note, do you have an occultist around there? They do some sick stuff with chickens and blood.

Just a thought.
