My Barnevelder and Cochin Chicks - Pic's included

Adorable pictures. Since you know something about Barnevelders, maybe you can help me with a question I have.

I have 13 Barnevelders due to hatch next weekend, and I was wondering if you can sex them based on the color of the feathers on their breasts. In the book "Choosing and Keeping Chickens" by Chris Graham, he writes about Barnevelders, "...any day-old Double-Laced male will be easy to identify from their white breasts; the females are gray-brown there."

Is this an accurate method of sexing the chicks? I have tried to find other sources to confirm/deny that information, but I've come up with a big goose egg

Thank you for your help.

I just looked up the barnevelder on feathersite.com. Ooo... I think I need a couple of silver ones. They are beautiful!

I will have to look at them and see if I notice a difference.

The bands on their legs are to tell the difference between the 2 blood lines. Yellow for one group and Orange for the others. Some of them have pink and blue bands also. I attempted to feather sex them based off of this website...

so I marked the ones that I think are girls with pink bands and the boys with blue. We will see in a few weeks how accurate it is.

If it is accurate I have 10 pullets and 4 cockerels and 1 that didn't have long enough feathers yet to tell.

Oh they are gorgeous. Can I ask where you purchased them from. I am dying to get some of the Barnevelders.

Very cute. I love the cochin pics. Are the bantam or standard. I have some mottled cochin/Orp cross working on my Orp project and they are adorable. I think cochins are some of the prettiest chciks.

WOW they are seriously cute... We have mottled bantam cochins that are 12 weeks old today and this is what they have turned out to look like. The feathering is changing on a daily basis... They are so adorable. The same lady we got all our birds from is hatching some buff bantam cochins for us (due to hatch in about 9-10 days from my reckoning).

yes, yes, please do tell us about the cochins. Are they bantam? I have some eggs coming in a week and I hope mine turn out to be as cute as that little blue baby you have !! That is the cutest picture ever. I can't wait!
