My Barnevelder chicks are hatching!!!

Some pip / zip and pop, others pip.... zii ii ii ii iip and slowly pop. I'd say it ranges from a couple of hours to 24 hrs...

So, what incubator, what temp and hum for incubating and what temp and hum for lockdown, plugs in or out. LOL sorry, but I am in the middle of my first hatch by incubator and there are so many differing opinions, I am curious. Thanks, if you have the time to post an answer! We have 1 barnevelder, she is a nice hen who lays nice round eggs. They are a beautiful breed!

I have a Brinsea Oct 20 Eco w/turner. I chose to keep my temp between 99.5 and 100. For humidity I was successful with the dry method. It ran about 28%-35% during days 1-18, and I got it up between 60%-70% for days 18+. That was 2 years ago and I had pretty good hatch rates with shipped eggs.

I am on about day 9 right now and of 40 eggs set, I can only confirm about 9 are developing - although 9 of the others are Marans and I cannot see into those... Shipped eggs are a gamble. Due to the success of my hatches 2 years ago, I am confident in the settings I use.

I totally get having all the questions in the world. It was my first hatch too and it was nerve wrecking! I used the Hova-Bator 1602N. Its a basic still air unit that has a tray built in on the bottom to put water. When it came to lockdown I maintained the temp that I incubated the eggs at of between 99 - 100 degrees F. The person who gave me my incubator gave me an older guide on incubating that recommended those temps. I also had the humidity between 45-50 for incubation and then kicked it up to about 70 for lockdown/hatch.

I think on my next go I will try the dry method. From what I have read it works really well and there are less issues with the chicks getting stuck and not making it out of the shell when they start to hatch. Shipped eggs are definitely a gamble, but these barnevelders are one of my dream chickens that I got from an awesome breeder here on BYC. I got her basic line, but I think next spring I plan on graduating to her Blue Project line that are absolutely gorgeous, but I think I will wait till it's a little warmer out to order them from her haha.

It really does. The majority of my chicks went right from the pipping to hatching seemingly skipping the zipping stage, but I had a few that took all night to zip and hatch out. I did intervene on two of them that seemed to have gotten stuck. I lost one before that who had gotten stuck to the membrane and couldn't make it out so I wanted to help these two out and see how it went though I know alot of breeders would say not to, but I couldn't help myself.

Looks like a great hatch, how many did you end up hatching?

Don't worry too much about helping some hatch, everyone does things differently. I usually can't help myself either but I still get yelled at by my wife. I spent last year hatching out a few thousand button quail and out of each set of 400 or so eggs a few would need help. After about 2K eggs or so you know when to hold them and when to fold them. The quail eggs are so tiny you just kinda crunch them between your fingers to get them out. Larger fowl eggs are a lot easier to judge when you can help, and more importantly, when you should leave them alone. I think a lot of people help too soon, dooming the chick by breaking a blood vessel. If you wait till the membrane turns white without drying out, you can basically peel the egg off the little guys. A little distilled water goes a long way of increasing a chick chances of hatching. BUT......It is important to remember that 80% of the time a chick that needed help hatching has issues and should never have been hatched. Sad but true.

Anyway, I ordered some eggs from TLS too, they'll get set tomorrow.

2 years ago I got my Barnies from Trisha - TLS Ranch. Eggs came to me across the country to Maine. 8 out of 10 hatched!! Beautiful birds and doing well still...

Overall the hatch went pretty well. I currently have 11 out of 14 that made it to the hatching stage. But I think that by tomorrow I will be down to 10. This one just cant really hold its head and move around at all and I have been giving it water, but I don't think it will make it. I have two that wound up with splayed leg so they are currently taped up to help them walk though one of them is really frustrating the bejeezus out of me because it refuses to try and stand and just flops on its side and sticks its legs out. But they are all fluffled out and in my improved brooder. I am selling five of them to another person here in town tomorrow and it makes me super saddd. But that just means that I will have to get more at some point.

Sorry lots of pictures I know
